View Full Version : galant down (almost)

one, ONCE in my life have i ever seen this. if i'm not mistaken it was on JP's talon. the timing cover on my galant is old and poopy and the bolt holes suck and its warped to shit. the cover pressed into the motor enough to grab the oil pump nut and stop it, motor keeps spinning, nut falls off. the oil pump gear eventually backs up a cunthair and allows some oil to spill out of the seal. i came very close (3qts down) from losing my motor.
it must have started yesterday but i didn't notice. today i drove roughly 100 miles for work ($48.50 woot). keep in mind that nut has never been removed ever, 150,000 miles on that motor at least.
my hyundai is down because over the weekend i did a timing belt on it and found a bad idler pully. i called 100 places and nobody could get it for me. i have mad parts store connections too from my previouis career as a mechanic. i had to order it and it took till yesterday to get it. so my girlfriend who normally drives my hyundai is taking the train to work (umdnj nb). on my way home she calls and asks if i can get her from the train station (newark penn, i've been dropper her off/picking up all week). i say fine, and she says she's going to rush and catch the 6:38 train. 5 minutes later after i already passed my house by like 3 blocks she calls and says she missed the train, and she'll be a half hour late. so i turn down some streets and mosey on home. i'm aiming for the driveway but i see my GF's parents getting in the car (tandem driveway) so i just park on the street. i chit chat with them for a minute, and walk up the driveway of death. i notice some stains where i park my car, i get down and try and smell it. hmmm
i turn around and walk back towards my galant and my galant is having a black period all over the street. i look closer and there is oil fucking EVERYWHERE.

panic sets in, i had the radio on damn loud, galants don't have oil gages and my idiot light is broken. fuck
check the oil, nothing. fuck

then i'm like, holy shit, her parents just left, galant down, hyundai down, GF on train to newark, FUCK.
so i haul it into the house and grab the parts and pop that timing belt on the hyundai with the quickness. close it up, shut the hood start it up and jump on 280. she gets out of the train station as i get onto 21, i'm 2 minutes late.

get back to the house, shuffle some shit around. pull my mustang out of the garage and shove it on the side of the house and pull my gaylant in to figure out what in the shit is wrong and found that.

had my GF not missed that train, i would have went another hour or so in traffic in the galant. even with that, had her parents not been loading into the car when i pulled up i would have parked in the driveway over my oil slick and totally not even noticed the oil (they have a very black and old and crusty driveway).

very close, very very close.
lesson learned: get a new timing cover, and fix the fucking idiot light.

i have a very large mess to clean up tomorrow. oil fucking everywhere.

Hell yeah that was close. Get a idiot light sender for one of those Autometer lights that comes on at a higher pressure than stock so you know its low before its too late or better yet buy a cheap electric oil pressure gauge. Its cheap insurance for your motor.
