alrite... soo i was leaving work early today at 3:45... my dealership is seriously 1/2 a mile from my house... soo as i was leaving im driving nice and slow up rt 15 north towards my house.. i notice a cop behind me.. ehh no biggy no reason for him to pull over, soo i make the u turn and head down my road by my house.. put my blinker on to pull into my driveway and bam.. his lights go on ..
officer what seems to be the problem??? Was I speeding, Did i forget a blinker.. what did i do.. I know i did none of these. Your muffler seems to be noisy. " my muffler.. really"
bam.. goes to his car... comes back with a nice ticket... loud exhaust.. " i see u have an outstanding number of these". " this will be my 11th officer" .. why dont u fix it???? " i just had my dads shop weld this exhaust for me and its quiet.. " no it isnt" ... i wasnt about to argue with him.. but i wanted him to look under my car.. i have a 16 inch resonator , full catylitic converter. all my exhaust painted high temp black.. and a black magnaflow oval muffler tucked away like stock...
sooo i refuse to pay this and i am going to court... this is really rediculious.. #11 its $67 a ticket soo lets just say its $70 .. thats $770 ive spent on these tickets in not even 2 years... this is completly unjust.. i have done BEYOND wat any of u fucking people have done and any of my fucking friends have done to quiet down my exhaust system and i NEVER drive over fucking 2,500 rpms when i get these tickets... now it is time to fight back..
first order... I need a copy of the law about loud exhausts...
secondly i will need to purchase a decibal reader..
i will have a copy of the law and i will use the decibal reader to measure my exhaust .. im done with this...
im seriously fucking ferious .. as the cop left i revved my car to 7,000rpms in hope he would come back and i could get into an argument in which id be arrested and have a chance to be heard at the municipal building..
funny thing was... my brother was watching me the whole time in my driveway as he was working on a 67 mustang with straight fucking pipes.. if the fucking thing wasnt off timing he was trying to start it and rev that sucker to 5,000 rpms to show what a real loud exhaust sounds like
fuck the police

haha in 5 years nobody has ever even said a word to me about my galant. no cat or anything.
i drove my mustang for a good while with a 4" downpipe exiting at the firewall. couldn't have been more than 3ft the whole thing. no muffler, nothing.
i think you just suck :D

I dunno. I think a lot of it has to do with how you "present" yourself to the officer. I guess over the years I have gotten pretty good at making a good impression and not being argumentative even if he is totally wrong. I've gotten stopped 3 times for my exhaust and each time I've explained that there is a full exhaust from the motor to the rear bumper as well as a muffler. I've also invited them each time to look under there and they will see the muffler is connected and there are no exhaust leaks present. I don't know what good a decibel meter will do you as far as going to court unless you can get another cop to state in writing that he witnessed the meter. What is helping you is that if the cop gave you a ticket and has no actual dB number then how can he prove what the level coming from your car was? I have a decibel meter if you'd like to come by I can measure the sound level for you but like you said, you need to find out what the limit is, what distance from the tailpipe it must be measured at, and what rpm it is to be tested at.

NY has a law on the books "muffler louder than one equipped stock" which says that any aftermarket muffler you install on the car has to be as quiet or more quiet than the stock muffler.
Just because the muffler or system is "carb certified" is guaranteed to pass emissions doesnt mean it gets around this law.
However, as far as I know there is no listing of what Db each car puts out stock. So theres no way to prove your car is louder than stock.
There is also a law in NY State that says a cant be louder than XX Db at YY feet away at ZZ rpm and then they list a chart of XX YY and ZZ. And that test can only be performed with a decible meter. People have gone to court pleeding not guilty saying that nothing was taken with a Db meter, but then they are found guilty anyway.
I have two 6" resonators and a restrictive RSR muffler (the old 3" one they dont make anymore) but no cat. I know my car is a hell of lot more quiet than a stock GTO exhaust or any of the SRT 6.1 motors Chrylser is using. It all comes down do "does the cop want to write you this ticket based on him looking at you and the car" which is unfair and biased.
Again this is all NY state. Dont know anything about NJ laws.

Still seems kind of vague. 95 dB from where, at the tip? 50 ft? How many RPM's? Idle, 2K, 3K? If you do find a decibel reader, make sure it has a calibration certification, and make sure you test that sucker, at different engine speeds, and different distances from the car. Might want to videotape it as well.

The SEMA model provides for the testing of vehicle exhaust noise to a standard adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) with an established noise limit of 95-decibels (SAE J1169). Under the SAE standard, a sound meter is placed 20 inches from the exhaust outlet at a 45 degree angle and the engine is revved to three quarters of maximum rated horsepower. The highest decibel reading is then recorded.

wow mark, that really is BS. its bad you dont live in hackettstown, you would have never gotten a ticket. u know all the cars in my town that are a million times louder than anybody's dsm, any nobody has gotten one. the thing that's really BS is the fact that you put a different exhaust on your car to prevent this from happening. the law says it has to be 93 decibals at 3k rpms because we used to have to check for that for friday nights at island on cars that were borderline.

05-12-2006, 09:18 PM
Chris if you read the statute, it says 95db, they might have just done 93 to be on the conservative side. And I also agree that the decision to give someone a ticket is probably 50% based on the driver in question. It seems to me that it is always the same people that get the majority of tickets, why? Not because their car is any different or they live in a shitty town etc. It usually boils down to driving habits and attitude when pulled over. Sometimes its easier to change your typical response to the cops than it is to change your whole setup to not get tickets

Dude are you really serious? Have you ignored the word for word quote that Mark and myself have posted? Have you missed Chris' statement that cars must meet 95db to be legal for "street night" at island dragway? If you use some common sense, you will realize that the law is 95db. There really isnt much to dispute here except for the fact that maybe his pipes arent "dot approved", but he's got a cat on there, so emissions shouldnt be an issue.
so you can't use exhaust cutouts there?
iboostdoyou
05-12-2006, 10:45 PM
haha it's funny you say that... the ONLY part that mark left out, was the subsection added to the bottom which reads:
[and] n No person shall use a [muffler] cut-out, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.
I meant Island. I wouldn't want it open on the highway
Too bad if it's not allowed, I was thinking about getting one instead of full exhaust.

05-12-2006, 10:57 PM
they never check for crap like that at island... every single time i've teched, the guy just says "is the batter in the front?", "are you planning on running above a 11?" "ok sounds good, dont forget your helmet" and lets me through. They wont check for a cutout, they really could care less unless your car is heavily modded

i didnt say i was going to ask him the law word for word out of the book. i simply was going to ask him what he does or can do about cars with an exhaust. i want to see what a police officer says inreference to this thats all.

i want to know of cops carry a decibal meter with them at all times...
i think its doubtfull...
next time i get pulled over i will give them my license, registration, insurance, print out of the law and see what they do.. i wanna see the decibal reading to see how bad my car is...
apparently all my friends say my car is the loudest and I have the most fucking done to avoid that... they basically have 3 inch turbo back apexi systems and apparently my full stainless turbo back with resonator, 3 in 3 out magnaflow muffler and a fake cat welded in the mess seems to be louder than a free flowing nuthing blocking huge fart can holding jdm slanted exhaust of their 2.0 turbo cars

what if you try a dual-tip muffler?

that may be my next step..
i was also thinking of getting a basic apexi N-1 ginomormous stupid " jdm" muffler and welding that in just to prove that it isnt that quiet and id still get tickets cause of it being bling bling

The best part is i ran my car with hearders, no cats, one resonator and no muffler for about a month and didnt get pulled over for it. Hell i didnt even have a tailpipe on my jeep with headers, no cats and a flowmaster 40 series. Me and mark live in the same town and drive the same roads. I have yet to recieve any exhaust tickerts.
And mark your fuckin gaylant is wayyy louder than the 3 inch APEXI N1 sporting 240sxs. They dont get exhaust tickets do they?

yeh bro, i told you man. my n1 setup was DEFINETLY quiter, yours is still LOUD AS FUCK. there is no way your gonna win in court, your best bet, if you wanna fuck them over, is keep your muffler on, but get a stock exhaust or my 2.5" and they wont know you changed it since all they'll see is your muffler. but as of right now, your car is louder than 95db, im 100% positive on that one. + think of this man, you paid 700$+ for loud exhaust tickets, YOUR LUCKY! how many times when you got pulled over and given the exhaust ticket, were you speeding? i know its been more than once. i'm already over 4000$+ in fines and tickets, so consider yourself lucky! when i had my bmw, i WISH i had a loud muffler or something stupid so the cop could give me that instead, cause usually, im not a dick, but they can't find other things to give me tickets for.

Get a dual tip. I have one and lots of time people think I have a stock exhaust, although I have had cops pull me over for the sound.
Can you get a 50state legal form from the company who makes the catback? Show that in court that its legal and hope they throw it out?
Does NJ do a fix-it thing like if you prove you fixed it within 10 days they throw out the ticket? If so you could get some reciepts from a shop with blank dates.
yeah, get one of those

Get someone who has a shop to give you a receipt for replacing the entire exhaust. Make sure it's a receipt for LOTS AND LOTS of money so you can cry to the judge about how you spent big bucks to fix it and he'll probably let you go on the fine. It worked for my neighbor a few years back.

One or 2 exhaust tickets, that could just be shit luck, or cops looking for revenue. 11 tickets, and you either have a police department with a personal grudge against you, or more likely you drive like an asshole. Don't take it the wrong way, I collected a bunch in my relatively short life.
At one point I happaned to piss off the police chief's wife by going down her street "loudly". Needless to say I was constantly harrassed until I sold the car and got a different one that wasn't as high profile.

haha, thats because they're looking for the little things and don't realize the obvious stuff
I think that's true. A few days after I got the TSI registered I was pulled over for 50 in a 25, the cop checked like everything but at the end let me go with just a verbal warning. He was totally oblivious that next to my brand new NY registration sticker was a NJ inspection sticker  After that I stopped caring about inspection. Haven't been pulled over anymore but I drive like a granny most of the time.

Exactly 13 hours after I type this I get pulled for doing 80 in the rain at I-80. I was getting late for work, there was enough traffic to feel safe (I don't weave) and wasn't looking for police and it was one of them stealth black ones. So I got a speeding and a careless driving ticket....
I have a clean NY license, what should I do now?

I've been in that situation a bunch of times (NY license and NJ ticket). I've paid every one right away and NEVER had it get back to my insurance company. Just pay them and think of the money it'll save on your insurance.

Thanks, that's what I'll do. I looked at their charts and it seems it'll be around $300...
