Something wierd happened today. Driving along, the temp needle is coming up, but I have no heat. I keep driving along and the temp needle climbs a little high so I pull over right away and goes back to normal. Still no heat. I rev it a bit and I drive it around the parking lot a bit to see what happens, and the heat kicks in suddenly.
Any ideas?

Air in the system = higher gauge temps most of the time.

yup low on coolant for sure. when the heat is on/off and the gauge is flakey, that's always the problem.
Check for pinholes in all the water lines...especially the heater hoses going to the firewall if they are original.

+1 for low coolant.
Would some type of blockage cause this too? Maybe ice is forming?

Topped off the coolant his morn, ran like normal.
Now, to figure out where it's leaking

When my car was "loosing" coolant, it ended up being a worn out rad cap seal. Coolant would evaporated from there. Just check that before going crazy after leaks.
