Hey guys/girls
I'm having a weird problem that i cant figure out. it started to happen middle of last week and been trying to figure it out.
So lately my exhaust got really quite for some reason. also i believe that this is causing the car not to boost like it use to, which is set at 9-10 [i think].
It's not cat because i dont have cat. So what could be the cause of this?
thank you in advance,
Joe

you probably have a huge boost leak, give it a boost leak test and come back

i went to jnz since i'm down in philly to get the car check out. I know i should have done it myself but i didn't know how to do it so i would rather see and learn from it. So there was couple small leaks josh told me that i had leak on biss screw so he replace the o-ring but it was still leak due to screw was worn out and it's leakin little bit, Also there is 2 pin hole leak on my upper intercooler pipe where tb and the elbow meets. Seems like it's boosting better than before but i really think my exhaust is still quite.
just curious the gasket goes from head to exhaust manifold is leakin so i should be getting it replaced soon but would this cause my exhaust to get quite???
Thank you

Are you sure you just arent used to the sound by now?

Quite a quixotic quizzical quip to quote quite instead of quiet.

sorry about the spelling on top i was really tired since i had a long day.
BigT= i know couple of my friend said the same thing but after i went to jnz it got little bit louder. Having 3"exhaust & downpipe with no cat should be loud is hell.

your windows are closed with the cold weather. Open them up and it'll be ricerifically loud again.
Your exhaust mani gasket is leaking exhaust, which will make your exhaust quieter. Any leaks of any kind you have before the muffler will obviously make it quieter, since less air is going to exit out the back. A boost leak is going to allow less air to make it into your motor, producing less exhaust and it'll be quieter. Also make sure some ass didnt stuff a tennis ball down your tail pipe or something lol
lol Kyle, a few small boost leaks wont affect the way the exhaust sounds enough to start a thread about it. And, i have full 3inch exhaust and its not as loud as some others.
I still think this whole exhaust getting quiet and louder is more psychological than anything.

take nothing for granted my good friend! We DID in fact have a 3 page thread on headlight glue. And if the boost leaks are big enough it certainly could quiet the exhaust, and would also help explain why he wasnt making boost

Lol yeah openin up the window will make the exhaust loud of course.
I think you might be right on this since past couple days i been searching all over the fourm and exhaust will cause boost to build slower so i really think that that might be causing it. So i should be getting new 4 layer exhaust mani gasket tomorrow so i'll def. be back tomorrow night in jersey and post it there.
Thank you

lol just curious which exhaust system do you have? i have apexi downpipe, apexi dunk exhaust system.
Yeah you might be right but you know when your car doesn't sound the same you know something is wrong right. I just wanted to make sure there is no problem with the car that's all.
No i'm not trying to make this thread like 3-4 pages just wanted to figure this out how all of the sudden my exhaust got quite that's all.
Thank you guys for the reply hopefully new exhaust mani gasket will help.

If there is a hole big enough to cause boost not getting into the motor, the car will have much more symptoms than being quieter. It probably wont run. I remember last summer, i did a boost leak test for the hell of it(i actually do them religiously) and i found a nice slit about an inch and a half wide on one of my couplers. The car sounded fine and even drove fine, didn't have link or a logger at the time to watch fuel trims. Spool-up might have been a hair slower but i still hit full spool. The only time I have not been able to build boost on a boost leak is obviously when a pipe pops or a clamp hasn't been tightened down at all and even then it holds a tiny hair until it pops half way off or something. I do agree with the exhaust mani gasket possibly altering the sound enough to question, but again has to be a decent leak and should make the engine bay sound like crap.
One thing that comes to mind though, why are you running such low boost?

I bought the car beginning of oct. from phil. So i was breaking in the engine for while and most of my money went to my parents to help them out little bit and they are paying the rent for while i'm in philly for school. Also just wanted to get use to driving and hp wise [since i only drive civic most of the time]. Now i really dont trust the area i live so i got the alarm done which cost me good amount of money so i'm broke is hell and cant really afford anything like boost gauge, boost controller.
So i went to jnz again to get new spark plug wires, exhaust mani gasket. Found out the my coilpack is causing the spark where it connect to the wires, so exhaust seem to be fine but i can't really try to gun it since everytime i get close to 4000rpm cause the car to sputtering. Also drove to school after car was done it seems like if i'm in gear under 2000 rpm or 5th gear while trying to gas it seems like engine is shacking like crazy.
So i don't know what else to do anymore... I got boost leak fixed, new exhaust mani gasket.
Only reason why i'm posting is so i could try to figure it out and hope to learn from it.
So thank you guys

Usually, in a 3500lb. car with a 2 liter engine, if you mash the gas under 2k rpms, or low rpms in 5th gear, the car will shake pretty violently.
