View Full Version : Dowel pin on crank

I was told that the dowel pin on the crank is not structurally necessary, and is only used to line up the flywheel so that the bolts go on in the right places since they are not spaced symetrically. I have a crank that does not have the dowel pin in it and was assured that as long as I line it up properly that it will not make a difference. Question is, do I bother trying to get a new dowel or don't worry about it as long as I can line up the bolts the right way (obviously by lining up the dowel hole in the flywheel with the spot the dowel would be on the crank)?

I think that as long as you put the flywheel in the correct location it won't be any problem at all.

its just a roll pin anyway, you can get one at any hardware store for like 10 cents.
but you don't need it.

The one on the crank sprocket for the t-belt is a roll pin but I thought he meant the one on the back of the crank.

YOU NEED IT.
No matter how tight the flywheel bolts are, the boring of the flywheel holes ares larger than the flywheel bolts and it will allow movement. Enough movement and engine vibrations will end up causing the two to begin to friction weld together.
Don't ask how I know.

Agreed you need the dowel, that and tranny dowels should not be left out.

Yup, I agree with Brent. I would have said F it, just use the bolts untill I saw his brand new ACT flywheel literally welded to his crankshaft. All 6 bolts were tight and cranked down, but not having the pin allowed the flywheel to slightly "rock" becuase the bolt holes are bigger than the flywheel bolts. His flywheel had oval shaped bolt holes after a while.
Get the dowel pin, it's probobly $2 from mitsu.

I don't even know how the pin came out of the crankshaft in the first place, but if I get one, does it have to get pressed in or what? I am using the stock flywheel (resurfaced of course) btw, so far.

Yeah, it gets pressed in by a hammer.
