Wheel width means nothing. Tire width does. The edge of the wheel will never get close to anything, the edge of the tire will. What I'm trying to say is you can put a thin tire like 225 on a 9inch wide wheel and it will fit fine. If you put a 245 on a 7" wheel it can rub. 225 is way too thin for a 9 and 245 too wide for a 7 (it CAN be mounted but you'll get an angle'd sidewall) but I'm just making a point.

If you stick to a 235 tire safe offsets are +35 to +40, assuming the diameter of the tire is the same as stock (if you use a shorter tire that will throw off your speedo, you get more room). Also if your car is stock height, you can get away with a wider tire or offset outside of that range. The lower your car is, the less room you have. Also if your springs are very tight (like autox stiff) you can get away with more as the tire will move up into the well less.

I'm running 17x8's with 45mm offset and its close to the rear lateral arm as well as the front struts. I'm also using a 235/45/17 tire on it. Come to think of it some of the reason for the tire being really close to the struts in the front is that I've dialed in a bunch of camber with strut bolts so that brings the top of the tire closer to the strut. My cousin's 1G has the same combo as my GVR4 and the rear on his actually rubbed the wheel weight on the lateral arm at first. The GVR4 is a little tougher to fit bigger tires on so if I fit them on it you can probably go bigger on a DSM.

35mm will probably cause the fronts to stick out a bit with a 8" rim. I've got 45mm offset which is pushing the envelope further than the 43's are. IMHO you're safe with 43's and worst case scenario you'd have to space them 1 or 2 mm out. No where near enough to cause a dangerous situation.

I have a set of Koing Tantrum 17x8 and they have a 40mm offset and never gave me a problem rubbing on my 1G with the stock suspension or The DSS Roadrace Coilover kit I was running on the car slightly lowered. The tires i have on the wheels now are a 235/45-17 but the majority of the time I had them on my 1G (there now on my 2g stock suspension) they had a 234/40-17 which I know is a tiny bit wider then what i got on them now but neither tire ever rubbed ever rubbed on my 1G and everything looks good on my 2G with the same wheel setup.

Just to clarify, the 43mm offset will tuck the wheels UNDER the car more, not make them stick out more.
