View Full Version : IS my Turbo dying?

Ok, so the other day i was driving home from work and when i gassed it, the turbo would whine like it never has done before. Its this high pitch spool, and i cannot boost it past 5 pounds. This just happened out of nowhere and im wondering if my turbo finally took a crap. I checked for shaft play but it seems ok. The only real symptom that i can tell is that horrible spool up noise and the fact that it wont spool past 5 pounds. IS there any other way to check if it is def my turbo thats causing the problem?

it could be dying, or it could be a boost leak, they will wistle too. Take the intake pipe off and check for contact and shaft play, if they are fine, check for leaks.

Glenn, come over my house sunday morning and we'll take a look at it together. If its a boost leak, we'll fix it.

What turbo is on the car? I've seen problems with 14b/16g outlet pipes not being bolted down tight enough and make a very identical noise to what you're describing as air was leaking at the flange and gasket .

Evo16g. You mean the J pipe?

Two instances of similar problems:
My turbo blew off one of my IC pipes and it would only boost about 5psi because of the gap in the piping.
My friend Steve had a 1g with a stock 14b on it and the same problem 90TalonTurbo had, the internal wastegate is on a shaft, one end goes to the flapper that actually covers the port and the other is attached to the arm that the actuator attaches to and that shaft was pushed in somehow and so the flapper was pushed down so that it was not covering the entire hole...boost was limited and it made a different noise than usual because of the flapper being "open" if you will. With 90TalonTurbo we swapped his turbo, with Steve we switched turbine housings to a ported one before eventually upgrading to a big16g.
Good way to tell is like MikeL said, check for shaft play (side/side and in/out) then if you can, check for boost leaks. Also check vacuum lines related to the mbc, could have the same effect.

Check your rear view mirror for smoke when you try and boost. Sounds just like my turbo before it went.

What kind of smoke? Black or white? My brothers exhaust smokes black smoke at wot but his turbo seems fine.

your brother's a/f ratio is rich at wot, causing black smoke, i highly doubt it has anything to do with it. You just dont want to see oil or coolant burning out your exhaust aka blue or white smoke, black is probably ok.

Alot of cars puff a little black smoke at WOT, could be a little blowby or just a bad tune, probably nothing.

blue smoke as in oil from the turbo

"ive seen problems" meaning, dropout was stupid enough to put a used j pipe gasket on :)

i say boost leak... in my case, we swapped the turbine housing as jon described... but the sound we were hearing was in fact a boost leak (the bov was leaking above 10 psi) which caused noise during spoolup. let me know if you need a boost leak tester, i have one in my car.

Yea man hopefully you can do a boost leak test it'll save a lot of time and aggrevation to do it. Boost leak tester + decent air compressor and you'll know pretty quickly if that's what the problem is or not.

I need a boost leak tester. If anyone has one please let me know. Also, does anyone here have a lot of experience installing FPR'S. If you do lemme know because i need to install my afpr.

dude.. go make one

go to home depot .. 2" pvc rubber END CAP(the one that comes with a hose clamp) and 2 LARGE diameter washers (small inside diameter for bolt)

go to pepboys.. buy that stainless steel valve stem. no, not for the bling lol, but it has a better locking mechanism than a regular rubber valve stem

drill a hole into the endcap, shove the valve stem through with washers on each side, and voila.. boost leak tester
