View Full Version : Stuck crank pulley
I took the four bolts that hold the crankshaft pulley and the fucker won't budge. There is rust in there and i tried cleaning up as much as possible with a screw driver, hammer, and PB blaster, but no dice after an hour and then i gave up. The pulley isn't broke, but i'm changing my timing belt and waterpump so I HAVE to get it off. Any ideas? I'm thinking of getting a pulley puller and using that to pry it off, hopefully without breaking anything.

Well if your changing the timing belt then take the center bolt out and take the whole sprocket off with it. Maybe then you can tap if off from behind.

If you can get it out that way it'd work but I'd try prying on the pulley itself first. Lean the breaker bar against the oil filter housing so you don't crack the t-belt cover and pry one spot for a bit then turn the motor some with a ratchet and pry again. If you work your way around like that you'll usually get it off without having to pull the sprocket off with it.

I just beat the shit out of it with a piece of wood and a hammer.
I followed what john said and pryed it off with a prybar on the oil filter housing. Worked like a charm.

On a 2G? why was it stuck anyway? my 15yr old crank pulley
comes off without effort when I remove the bolts.
Was it on properly?
(ie, the little alignment hole -> alignment pin on sprocket)

It was on right, no clue why it was stuck. I got it off and its back on now and the car runs fine.

I've done at least a hundred of them over the years on all different sorts of Mitsus and Acuras. Sometimes it just happens, no obvious reasons, it just happens. Glad to hear you got it off. You owe me a beer next time I see you. :D
