So I moved today my car a couple hundred feet to the garage where I'll be working on it this weekend and during the moving (was being pulled) I heard some bad grinding. I remember when I drove it the few miles out of the track I heard a similar grinding sound even out of gear but the car appeared to drive fine. It sounds like a grind every revolution (of what?) when the car is rolling. It's not the brakes as they grind on their own. I'll have it apart this weekend anyway but I'm looking for ideas what might be broken. So far I'm thinking some diff is broken. Any suggestions?

not a brake dust shield?

Or more likely a brake rotor. My rotors get rusty even after a drizzle. Then the first time I stop they're clean again. If I dont drive in a few days I get a nice horrible grind until I get to the bottom of my hill and brake heavy.

I know all that, have dealt with rusty brakes and cars that sat for months. This is something else. Like I said I heard it the first time when I drove out of island after I overrevved my engine so I think I broke something else as well.

Tonight I'm taking the tranny off so I'll see if it comes from it.

In case anyone cares it turned out to be the transfer case.

It might not be the case, but rather the shroud that covers where the t-case and driveshaft yoke meet. Sometimes that shroud moves ever so slightly and rubs the driveshaft - the noise inside the car is amplified significantly.

edit: nevermind - just re-read that it started on a hard launch - the symptom i described usually occurs after removing the t-case and re-installing.

Glad to hear that you got it sorted out.
