I got a 96 GSX with 75K on orignal clutch and transmission. On friday I went to put my car in first and it would not go, no gear would work. Drove it again today and still the same thing. I Would say about 25% of the time it will go into gear. Is it the clutch? It drove perfectly fine until that friday.

Check your master/slave for leaks. How does the pedal feel?

yup. your hydraulics are probably fucked, and because you kept driving it so is your trans

I havnt really driven it, 5 miles at most, and not many starts or stops. The clutch pedal feels very week. If i push in the clutch and go to put it into first it does not go in, it stops about half way. Pretty much the same with every gear.

Still hard from that description.

Sounds like your clutch hydraulics are screwed up and your clutch is not disengaging completely so you cant get into gear. Thats if your lucky, if your not you need a tranny rebuild. If you drive the car like that, you WILL need a tranny rebuild.

Check the clutch fluid reservior. If its empty or almost empty, there is your problem you have a clutch fluid leak.

If its not, jack up the front of the car and lay under the front bumper and look at the clutch fork. Have someone get in the car and push the clutch pedal up and down (do I need to mention: make sure the car is safely jacked up and your pal getting in doesnt jump in DukesofHazzard style and drop the car on you). Visually make sure the clutch fork is moving almost all the way to the other side. While you're there check the slave for wetness or dripping. It could be a leak that isnt letting the clutch disengage but has not yet pumped out all the fluid.

If its not your hydraulics, it could just be your clutch cables out of alignment, but not likely. Brace your wallet for a new transmission. Since you said the clutch felt funny, that should be all it is.

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. Today I checked the reservior and it was low, very low. So i bought some brake fluid and filled it up to the correct level. Pumped the clutch a few times and then like magic it would go into every gear like always. The downside is that I then backed my car up and sure enough there was a fresh puddle right under the car. So I am guessing that there is a leak somewhere. I am going to check tommrow in the AM when it is light out. Would the master or slave leak like this or is it a broken hose/line?

Probably the cylinder. I've had both my master and slave cylinders crap out on me like that .

Its your slave, if the master went it would get wet inside the car.

Its more than likely your slave. Easy swap. Two bolts hold it on, then the fluid line. Bolt on the new one, screw in the fluid line, then have someone pump the hell out of the clutch pedal while you bleed it with the bleeder on the slave. Its not like brakes where you have to yell "up" and "down" to the guy pumping. Put a piece of fishtank plastic hose on the bleeder, pump the shit out of the pedal to keep pressure up and crack the bleed valve and wait for the fluid to come through the hose clean and without bubbled and tighten it down.

I just got a new one from the dealer, I forget the price. You can get it for half that price from pepboys or autozone but for $15-$20 I was willing to bet the dealer ones were better quality.

I changed the master and slave cylinder just to be on the safe side. Works like new. Thanks again.
