Mike, You seem well versed in this so I direct my question to you.
SCCA, Do you need to http://www.scca.com/joinnow.aspx to be able to race in any of there events?
Also, having zero track experance will/do they have people that could show me the ropes? My car should be ready to roll by friday. I live 15min from Etown too.
I am very intersted in this stuff, but never have the time to really sift thru all the clubs dates. I see they have a http://www.scca-nnjr.org/ Are you a member of it? Are you going to Etown4/5 or have your sights set on any event?
here's the complete autocross schedule for the tri-state area.

i love this thread
I'd love to go. But first I need good tires and my suspension in order. I've always had a semi-serious goal to prep the car for road racing.

SCCA has this new plan to squeeze money out of regional clubs and boost its own ranks. You now HAVE to be an SCCA member to participate in an event, but are allowed to be a "guest member" twice. For every "guest member" ie non SCCA member the regional club has to send $10 to the SCCA. So what most regional clubs are doing is charging $15 extra for nonSCCA members to be a "guest" for the day. Now that the SCCA is checking registration from every event (and collecting the $10 for non members) they know when you've done the guest thing twice so you can go twice with one region and twice with another etc.
To further complicate things, each time you're a guest member, you can take $15 off your SCCA membership. Since you can do it twice, you can take off $30 if you decide to join after being a "guest" twice. And some clubs (in order not to piss off new people) are only charging $10 extra for "guests" because thats what they need to pay the SCCA to let you run. So in reality your first two events are $10 extra but you get $15 back if you join the SCCA after two events.
Breakdown:
-Join SCCA now for $60, pay $35 at each event all year
-Do two events as a guest at $45, then join SCCA after for $30, $35 rest of year
Confused yet? Exactly.
Now when you say "track events" are you talking about roadracing at a track like pocono or limerock? Or just an autox? If you've never done a roadcourse before you should probably make your first event a school where you have access to instructors all day or an event like HPDE class 1 (novice) where you have to have an instructor for your first session and might be able to ask for one after that if you feed you need it.
As for autox, some places (like MSNE) will insist you have an instructor for your first run, and have a "parade lap" and "practive run" before your first run if you're a novice. NJ SCCA doesnt do that, but if you ask for someone to do a run with you, they'll do it. But you have to be proactive and ask. Every autox event has a "novice class" so you only run against newbies in your car class and are not up against experienced guys.
I'm 50/50 on showing up at Etown on Saturday this weekend, only because I'll be at the meadowlands on Sunday no matter what. I'm already a member of MSNE and need to get in as many events with them as possible because I'm up for a trophy for the year in B class.

Oh another thing: when you join SCCA for $60 (or $30 or $45 depending if you did any "guests") you also have to pick what region your SCCA lic will be. The region charges more too. I dunno what PSCCA or NY or NJ SCCA charge for regional dues. But I know lots of the flag workers at Pocono all have Ohio or Minesota SCCA licenses since that region is free. I need to look into that.
I really want to do a track event soon, but I'm avoiding it since my car is running well and I'm driving well in autox. Half the time when I do a track event the car breaks. Sigh.

LOL!
Good tip on the region stuff!
So I can just show up at the Etown event on saturday? Go as a guest and pay 15$ plus ?? ? I guess I'd be class newb and my car would be Pro....
I wanted to run the drag friday but the weather looks like shit. So this would be a nice fill :)
If that is the case, I'll be the guy in the blue 08 Evo on saturday!
Thanks for all your help, its really...well helpfull! ^_^b
I would like to "play" on tracks and maybe look competivily at AutoX.
Just looking to put the Evo to its full use a couple times a year.
Edit:
I found this : http://www.scca-nnjr.org/NNJR_Solo2/Solo.shtml
"2008 Season Entrance Fee is $35 for SCCA members and $45 for non-SCCA members. Must show membership card for discount. All are welcome"
"Use the GATE #4 ENTRANCE by airport. OPENS AT 7:00 am. Closes at 10 am"
7am! Jesus! I get two days a week to sleep late! You can't take one of them away! JK
If its fun and I dont suck balls to bad, I might do the year.

TurboMike, lemme know more about the auto-x at meadowlands this sunday
i will call outta work for this if my car can get in.
i DONT have a roll bar and i WILL buy a helmet new if thats all i need and cant borrow one
if u go, and i can go, can i be an annoying little bitch around you so i can figure out what's goin on???
TurboMike

Chris- sure but you have to help me change my tires :) The only reason I wont be there Sunday is if I wake up at 11am or something. You dont need a rollbar for autox, and if you bring a helmet it has to be SA2005 SA2000 M2005 or M2000 rated by snell (DOT is no good). If you dont have a helmet they have loaner helmets.
For both NJ SCCA Saturday and MSNE Sunday I highly recommend you use their online pre-reg thing TONIGHT. If you dont prereg by the thursday before (they lock it up sometime Friday) you gotta wait in a "non pre reg" line forever. Everyone who pre-reg'd gets to register before you while you stand with your cock in your hand waiting. And if they sell out, you go home. Theres no penalty to pre-reg and then not show up, they're just trying to force you to type all your shit in online so they dont have to do it that morning. So if theres even a chance you might go, pre-reg.

I had to do some click-searching and came across this website: https://axwaresystems.com/
Than : http://www.axwaresystems.com/axorm/calendar_main.php
And select the region and stuff.
I was able to pre-reg for the Etown event.
As for class, correct me if I am wrong, I am class A-Stock. My car is 100% stock, not even an intake.
Rule break down: http://www.scca.com/contentpage.aspx?content=61
That goes into what each event is and the class break down.

Come on down!
We had a great time at MSNE on Sunday.
The rules are much less regimented than the SCCA.
I think this fits better with the DSM folks.
If Mike could just avoid the cones.......
TurboMike

Hey I had my street tires on. Then again, I hit just as many cones with my race rubber.
Saturday is supposed to rain and NJ SCCA has a tendance to cancel in heavy rain. Once time I was pissed I woke up so early and drove down there to have those pussies cancel. So I might skip it and be lazy.
In SCCA A stock is the fastest stock cars like non Z06 Vettes, S2000s, Mazeratis, Supras. Miatas run in Estock for NAs (97 and older) and CStock for NBs and NCs. DSMs run in GStock for FWD and DStock for AWD. MSNE has their own class structure, but A is also the fastest cars and lower letters are slower I think DSMs are E class and I dunno what stock Miatas are? D class?

I went to the one at Etown. :)
Met a lot of people, learned a lot too.
First run was 48sec, than I got a 41sec run at the end...The other EvoRS IX got a 38sec run and he was 700lbs light.
Was fun, I think I'll go again next weekend.

I missed both days. Fuck. I skipped Sat because it was supposed to rain, woke up and it was a totally blue sky all day. At least i got a lot of car work done.
Then this morning I get home at 4, set alarm for 7:30, and wake up at 10am. Roll over and sleep until 1pm. Fuck, there goes my points for the season. Now I cant miss another MSNE event.
Anyone go Sunday? Did it rain either day?

Click around..It will tell you all the events for said month/group. Next MSNE meet is a school that seems to be booked. Than 25th is the next points.
SCCA-NNJ is Apr. 12th at Etown. I will be going.
You guys should def come out. Last saturday everyone got 8 runs in. I took an instructor for 2 of the runs and he really helped me out. Shaved 2seconds off my time.
Just make sure to bring food with you.
I also need a source of cheap/free decent tires for my car.
