So a few days ago, i helped finish up my friends project car. a 1992 Lexus Sc-300 Na-t. Powered by a T66 and tuned with a S-afc

the past few days we spent making sure it was perfect and getting it tuned correctly. it was doing pretty amazing and pulling hard for 10psi on a stock 2jzge motor.

than we decided to take it to the supra meet today at englishtown

everything was goin well, on the way home.. i decided to fine tune a little make it a little better.. did some hard pulls on it

than while on the parkway, we noticed it was pouring smoke from the shifter boot. soo we stopped immediatly and opened the hood.. nuthin major.. just the pcv valve had spit oil onto the exhaust mani.

soo we cleaned it and went back on our way

bout 5 minutes later the car was pouring smoke everywhere, we seriously had a smoke sheild. soo we said screw it and took the next exit.

we took the exit and started to pull into a parking lot.. going about 15 mph down the road.. i hear a loud pop and see the hood shake a little.. utt ohh bad news.. than smoke is worse.. we jump out of the car.. go to pop the hood a little and bam.. flames everywhere!!!!...

soo we run like hell and within 10 minutes the car was engulfed in flames..

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/gvr4737/burntcar.jpg

soo we run and get help..

by the time we got a fire extingisher.. the car was too much

soo the fire department came and put it out.. smashed all our hard work to peices and the car is destroyed..

later we relized that it may have been the pcv valve mixed with removing the charcoal canister and having open exhaust fumes in the engine bay..

here are pics of the whole thing

i was in the passenger seat tuning the car at the time.

I'm so getting an extinguisher. I had a very small electrical fire the other day that miraculously didn't get to anything important and I just had to replace one wire. About the scariest thing I've had so far with the car.

I carry an extinguisher in my trunk just in case. Sad to see what happened to that car.

:( it is sad..

the turbo that was on that car was the same turbo that was on Joe ( Twizzles) Sc300 when he crashed it.

we think that the turbo may actually have a curse :?

it loves eating up sc300's

Dude....so sorry to hear about the car! Our thoughts are with him. Makes me think I should get an extinguisher for my car. I'm glad I didn't remove my charcoal canister now.

Seems like everyone is having car problems all of a sudden. :(

Wow, major suckage. Did the fire dept put that hole in the dash and then rip out the airbag? Just wondering if thats their car fire procedure.

My really stupid car fire story:
My first car burned oil like a bitch (it was a K car), had to put in oil all the time. Come home (hot motor) and check the oil, its low. Like a dumb kid I stuck in a quart upside down and walked away while it was pouring. Quart fell over and poured oil all over my hot manifold. I walk back to the front of the car and the oil catches fire. Since the trunk was open (to get the oil) I run back there in a panic and see a gallon of washer fluid. Up to this day, i although thought washer fluid was soapy water. After this day, I know it contains alcohol. Grab the plastic bottle and rip off the child proof cap and run to the hood and try to start putting it on the fire. Have you ever tried to pour a gallon of fluid out of a quarter size hole in the bottle in the panic? It doesnt work well, i wind up plashing waster fluid all over everything. Finally a get a little on the actual fire and the last thing I remember before my eyes closed was a fireball coming at me. I jump back as it hits me and I land on the trunk of the car I parked behind. The whole engine is a fireball now. Not knowing what to do (I lived in an apt and by the time I got upstairs to call 911 the car would explode, cell phones didnt exist yet expect for Crocket and Tubbs), I slammed the hood down and ran to a house on the block to start banging on the door to call 911. I get to the house and turn around to see theres no fire. The washerfluid and oil had burned out. Car: soot on manifold. Me: burned off my eyebrows, the leading edge of my hair, and face skin was all red for a day. What a little idiot peckerhead i was.

keep a fire extinguisher in ANY car. i keep one medium sized one in my galant, a small one in the cockpit of the mustang and a medium one in the trunk. a must have for any car.

Back in Brazil, It's mandatory for every car to have one. You never know when shit will happen.

honestly though i thaught about it..

i always had a medium one in my galant.. and that thing always smelt like gas and oil and hell

this car ran soo smooth and had no smells

it was soo random

im sure we woulda put a fire extingisher in it eventually

but this was the 3rd or 4th day the car was on the road

a small/medium one wouldnt of put out this fire

the firemen had to use a huge hose and took bout 20 minutes to put it out

the car did not have an airbag.. 1992 lexus..

that hole was put in by the fire department in order to try and put out the fire inside the dash.

we still have to pick up the car tommorow and see wat is still alive.. hoping maybe the safc, wideband, and other stuff is still salvagable.. also hopefully the turbo and many are fine

honestly..

how quickly this car went up.. a small or medium extinguisher wouldnt of done shit..

maybe if u drop a lit cigerette in a car than itll work.. but oil/gas fires u need proffessionals

I wonder what the shelf life is with these things? This might be something to seriously consider buying, but I have an old extinguisher in the car now from a few years back. Nothing like any in the link you posted, Greg.

true, but nobody said you couldn't have 2... it would have made a serious dent in the fire just long enough for the fire company to come and put out the rest. I'd rather have 1 or 2 then depend on a fire company alone.

Brent, don't think there is a "life expectancy" so to speak of fire extinguishers, but I would imagine they should be replaced every 5-7 years with the cost being between 100-200 bucks... not that big of an expense considering what it could be saving.

I also know that Kidde makes decent extinguishers for the home that work well against grease, oil, wood or electrical fires.

Fuck that "call me a ricer" bullshit. In Europe these things are mandatory in every car (at least the countries I know). It's a basic safety device. And we are basically playing with fire every day with our cars...

I know the fire extinquishers in my old shop had to be checked and recharged every 2 years by a "fire extiguisher shop". Guy would come in and take half each year and drop off loaners to replace the ones going in for testing/recharge. Some of those were like 20 year old looking ones, so I don't think they go bad...so long as they are still pressurized. Mine were the type that shoot foam so they worked on oil/grease but probobly don't do shit for electrical fires.

Granted..this is coming from the guy who didn't have one in his racecar or trailer. I was a tool.

I got mine at WalMart for like $15 including a bracket. If you had got at it with even a small extinguisher when you first pulled over it may have done the trick. In the few minutes it takes the fire department to get there it will get 10x worse. In any case it sucks to see that happen.

Theres a difference between an extingisher mounted where you can get to it, and two chrome ones with LEDs in the handle mounted on each A pillar with NOS stickers on them.

atc250r
04-09-2008, 06:40 PM
I've got one on each pillar (a,b, and c) so I've got 6 of them with 5 leds' each. y0000oooOO!!
