So I posted up a Tech Question on DSMTalk...And actually I wanna ask you guys on here as well since some of you worked on the car and know Nate personally.

Anyway, He had the 6 Hood Pins installed on the Fiberglass Hood but they weren't regular Hood pins, I had a hard time Finding out who made them and what they were called. Hence why I posted a thread on Talk...anyway I found that part out (DZUS Fasteners, can be found on summit.com) But I posted a picture of the hood and I've gotten like 5 PM's about the Lack of Pop ups asking how it was done and where can they get one etc etc...It's crazy.

But My question to you guys is...Is it Necessary to have SIX of those On the hood?? I wanted to get Two Aerocatch ones and put them on like most guys with CF Hoods do but didn't know if Nate did that for his own personal reasons or if it was Actually needed. I know the hood is light but it seems no different than If I had a CF Hood on there.

This was the Picture that Got everyone all excited...Just For Reference.

Yeah They Are, but I was curious why he had 6 on there I've only ever seen a DSM With 2.

Probably not necessary, but they keep the thing fitting cleaner and snug. I think the 4 in the front would be fine. If you're replacing them with only 2, just space them wide enough (usually to the inside of where the pop up light covers would normally be) and you should be fine. Plan on glassing up the old holes then?

Thats my Issue, I'd rather not because the paint is still in Great condition...I was thinking of getting a Cover made in the shape of the old faster made out of something that wont rust and powdercoat them and re fasten them to the hood...I dunno we'll see...I'm still up in the air about it.

fiberglass hoods like to fly off at 140mph....if he had 6 fasteners then I'm sure there was a reason for it.

Yeah thats what I figured...there just rusty and Old, And two of them dont work anymore like they should...So either way I gotta replace them.

Nate has also been MIA for a few days.

That's a rare, custom, 1 off fiberglass hood...well at least it was when we ordered it.
I spent hours trying to get those bastards to line up right....then Nate scratches the paint 2 minutes after i get them installed.

Anywho, they're standard size dzus fasteners, you can get a pack of them from Summit. Just rivet the new ones on and you're good to go.

Nates been in florida. I dont remeber 100% why he put 6 on there, but if I know nate, and I do very well, there was a good reason. I cant imagine nate putting them on there for fun. That hood is only thin fiberglass (not carbon fiber) and its pretty flimsy, so @ 150mph, it might have been a concern.

the Dzus fasteners come in different styles....some have built in handles and some don't.
I suppose you already know that they don't turn at all by hand. You need a flat head screwdriver to undo them. It's a bitch but I think we liked the flush look of the ones on there...can't remember.

Yeah I found the Needing a screwdriver part when He dropped it off...But one of them is missing the spring the keeps and ALL of them are rusty.

Your not kidding about it being Flimsy either, Eventually I think I might go Carbon Fiber with CF Headlight covers...But I'm not sure....As I REALLY Like the No pop up look.

I wasn't Kidding when I said I needed something New.

I'm not sure if they come in Stainless...I'll have to research that.

LOL, i remember that scratch. The gang of us who spent fucking days choking on paint dust and bondo fumes wanted to hit Nate in the head with a wrench, but I think we were suprised that he didnt accidently drop the a/c unit out of the 2nd story window onto it.

Lol, He told me about the Bullet hole in the roof...Because when he was leaving he was like "You gotta leave the bullet sticker on the roof" Which I didnt even notice then I saw it and laughed and was like Ok?? He's like "No really there really was a bullet hole there"

Funny shit.

If you decide to keep them, this tool is a lot safer than a screwdriver ;)

Yeah I'm still up in the air about it...they are already riveted but If I take the old ones out and get new ones can I reuse the same holes??

I dont see why not as long as When I'm taking them out I dont mess anything up.

i'd keep the 6 on there, they help keep it nice and flat. there isnt' much surface area on those fasteners, so if you only had 2 its possible to rip them out.
just buy some replacement stainless ones and a rivet gun and stainless rivets from harbor freight.

I was gonna upgrade to these...

http://www.deftracing.com/aerocatch_hood_pins/index.htm

 :D

But I'm not sure I wanna cut a bigger hole in the hood to make them fit, and It is super light and flimsy.

I have two aerocatch on a 2G fiberglass hood. No latch at all (just the aerocatch) with stock hinges on the back. At about 80-90 mph the hood starts fluttering like crazy. Once I get to 100mph its banging up and down on the back edge near the windshield. I was in a different car in front of mine, and we were doing about 75mph and I could see the front lip against the bumper fluttering.

So my 2 cents: fiberglass hoods flex a LOT. Your hoodpins need to be able to take that flexing. because the aerocatch are so large and each one has like 6 or 8 rivets into the fiberglass, as long as youe fiberglass doesnt crack it will stay down.

you definatly need all 6. that hood is really really flimsy becuase I had frank make it without any underside brace or layer (cheaper & lighter). But even with all 6, it baloons up at fast speeds. I would imagine with only a couple pins you would risk the rivets pulling through and having the hood fly up/off. (get stuck on windshield...block vision, scare the shit out of you, crash car, flip, die in fireball. It could be bad!). Without the side pins, I think the center would lift up enough to crack/split the hood in the center.

As everyone said...Dzus pins. yes they make stainless ones. I would just drill those rivets out and put in 6 new ones in the same places since the plates are already lined up and good and that was a major pita job to get those things on.

Sorry for the scratch  not nearly as bad as the time the tripod engine crane fell on the car right after the first paint job crushing in the two front fenders.

Sorry for the late reply. I just got back from Orlando, FL last night at midnight. We took the kids to Disney World. (Gratuitus picture post coming soon..beware.)

BUt On Talk I got Like 4 or 5 PM's Asking me about the Hood...Lol.

Thanks Nate, I figured as that was the reason...I didnt realize it until I went out to take better pictures of the hood that it was really light/flimsy.

I had a glass hood on my Nova with just 2 in the front and 2 in the back. At around 100mph the hood would start to flap like it was trying to fly away. Leave all of them on there.

Hey nate, what did you ever do with the original hood? 95rs, do you have it now? (BTW, what is your name anyway?)

Also, who ever wound up with the magical lee myles tranny, which is still the greatest dsm trans ever built by anyone, btw.

Not that you would want it, as it was dented, and had shitty paint.

The original hood is hrm...i don't know. I "think" it's in the new garage..pretty sure I kept that as "garage art".

The lee myles tranny is sadly apart but I still have it. Someone borrowed it for gvr4 use and dissassembled it then gave it back to me with the internal parts all mixed in a crate mixed with internals from another dsm trans. Cough-luke-cough.

don't you dare sell that trans, i want it!
