Before I open the car up tomorrow again to replace the trigger plate... I know how to crack open the crank sprocket, but how do you get it back on and retorque it without moving the crank?

impact gun.

though i assume you don't have one

after you take the shit off, put the bolt back in and move it as you need it. then take it back off to put the crap back together.

to move it, turn it slowly. to get the bolt out, snap it with your wrists as hard/fast as possible. thats how you move it without it loosening, and how you take the bolt out without it turning.

okay.. so i got my hands on an impact gun for the night.. I turned it to the max setting and the bolt's going nowhere.. this is 90psi at the compressor on the "4" setting on a crafstman gun..

i'm just going to put a breaker bar in there and tap the starter..

but how do you know when there is 80 ft.lb of torque on the bolt if there is no torque setting on the gun, and you cant used a torque wrench because the crank moves?

You need at least 150psi compressor to take that off. Also, make sure you are using a 1/2 impact gun. This week I try to use a 125psi compressor and got no where trying to take mine off. I was using a Snap-on gun.

Adriano,
how did you put the bolt back on? did you just run the air gun on it , or did you properly torque it to 80 lb.ft?

I use a torque wrench and made sure the car was in gear. I dont remeber the exact lbs thougt.

i LOVE their air tools. i actually ended up going wtih the mac 1/2 gun though because he gave me trade in on my crapy one and was cheaper than the ingersol (after trade in), but the funny thing is that its identical to the ingersol. from what ive heard they lost their patent and EVERYONE copied their gun (the titanium i believe its called). nothing beats the $35 ingersol air hammer you can get at lows.

i have an IR air rachet.. i likes it

i think IR just builds tools for mac, snap-on, and craftsman
i actually don't like the IR air ratchet too much. i prefer the snap-on one. even though i'm a die hard IR fan, the snap-on one is just more comfortable.
its my only non-IR pneumatic tool.

IR for life, hands down! Screw Strap On, overpriced, overweight, and underpowered. I will agree with gtluke though, my Snap On 3/8" air ratchet kicks IR's butt, however my 1/4" Snapper air ratchet broke every 2 months. For the cost of rebuilding them I could just buy a new IR every time and still come out ahead. It eventually met its final fate against the brick wall of a shop I used to work at

As for your dilemma, put the car in 4th gear, put on the E-brake, have a friend mash the brake pedal, and go to town with the breaker bar. :)

Oh and gtluke is correct, IR makes most if not all of the non-import tools for Mac and Matco (who sells them for twice as much), however Snap On makes pretty much all of their own stuff. Snap On's "Blue Point" air tool line however is crap, most of it is cheap Taiwan junk that you can get at flea markets for pennies on the dollar.

yup yup. i forgot my 1/4" air ratchet is also snap-on. its GREAT but yeah i've broken the snout off of it a few times. but i abuse the shit out of it too.

does that really keep the crank from spinning? I guess i'll try that tomorrow and see what happens. oh yea, I got the crank off by puttin a breaker bar against the axle and bumped the starter, bitch came right off  now to the task of getting it back on...

Yep, that lock the crank in place. You could just put the car in gear, but it will rock some.

got it back into place with the aboove mentioned method.. the crank rocked about 180* until it finally stopped and I put a good 80 lb/fts on the nut to be safe.

then the damn timing tensioner tool broke so now I have to get the tool from spxmiller then the talon will finally be running. just in time to go under the car covers for winter
