i drove my mustang to a jobsite today (greystone in morris plains) and on the way for some reason this is the worst traffic i've seen in the 5 months i've been going that way. i sat in traffic for a good 45 minutes in a 10 second mustang. fucking idle surge was driving me nuts and i didn't have my laptop with me to fuck around with the AEM EMS to stop it.
anyway once i got out of 1st gear i had a decent cyl miss. must have fouled a plug or something in all that traffic.
on the way home the miss got heavier and more persistent. if i held my foot in a position right between acceleration and deceleration the tach would jump wildly. fuckit, its done that before once in a while for the last like decade i've owned the car. then i'm almost at 280 and *silence* fucking motor shuts off. i pull over and i swear to god i'm 500ft from where i broke down in i think 1999 , the ONLY time that car has ever needed a flatbed. (okay nate trailered me back to his shop when i blew the control arms and driveshaft out from under my car :) )
the MSD 6al in the car is older than shit and not known for its reliability. when i rewired this car a few years ago i actually left provision in there to de-wire the MSD, but those connectors are in the driver side fender tucked away, behind where the coil is mounted. i was trying to find the connector and i just really didn't feel safe being on the driver side of the car on 80, so i climbed in the passenger side and laid in there up behind the console under the dash where the msd box was. i snipped the wires, jury rigged some connectors since all i had was my small galant toolbag cause it has like pliers and stuff in it, but i did find 2 eyelets in there i used. (mental note, replenish electrical connectors in travel tool bag) (mental note make mustang toolbag)
so i unwire the thing and it fires right up. i still have the miss but at least i got home.
once it cools down i'll go figure out if i have a shitted up spark plug, burnt a wire on a turbo manifold, or a rocker arm loosened up or something.
then i have to find another MSD type box i suppose, maybe i'll go with a mallory this time.

anyway, just my rant.
i did manage to flyby the general contractor on rt 10 though, he had his windows down and i gave him a full boost wastegate dump in the ear :D
i'm sure i'll get an earful tomorrow.

I've had an MSD leave me stuck on the road at least twice. I will not put one in my car EVER.

I remember when Jeff Hill was running MSD boxes on his 1G back in like 99 or 2000 with haltech E6S and I asked him about it: he had said that he keeps 3 of those msd boxes in his trailer becuase they shit out so often. I think it was the DIS2 model?

Those boxes have been the bane of ignition troubleshooting on every car Iv ever dealt with. Really, how reliable can a product be when the manufacturer puts in bypass wiring from the factory for when thier box shits the bed. Isn't that like Taco Bell including a roll of toilet paper with their food? :P Like saying upfront "It WILL fail" and we know it, so heres plugs to take it out.

Well luke if it makes you feel better......I replaced the stock points distrib. in my 67 with a Mallory unilite, making it the only electronic device in the entire car. It failed. The optical trigger burnt out, THANKFULLY in my friends driveway, aka, its home.

There once was a time I wished I could afford an MSD... then I had one.

Most of the MSD stuff is garbage. But the Digital 7 Stuff seems to work pretty good and not crap out as much. A big help is mounting them away from major heat or vibration. Those mounts they come with work wonders.

Yeah, they can't tolerate the heat at all. The only one I had that lived a long time was the one in my Nova. I mounted it under the dashboard.
