Engine case was cracked from a snapped chain. bike is new, run for 34 hours. freak thing. now have to totally rebuild the whole motor/trans to install a new case set.

OUCH! Don't they have guards on them to prevent that? Is that your bike or Joe's?

Thats Nates bike. They have case savers as they are called, but they are not very strong. In this case the chain blew right through it like it was paper.

That sucks! Was it a stock or an aftermaket one? The stock one on the R's is strong (3/16" steel) but the mounts it bolts to go into some weak locations on the case. The aftermarket ones for the R use the same locations but are shaped differently so that the case saver lays up against the case in front of it and only relies on the bolts to hold it on, not deal with the impact of a chain hitting it.

If Nate needs a good MC mechanic that is priced fairly I've got a friend that does it as a side job out of his house.

Thats impressive air!

Yeah, it was damn dusty, I didn't process some of the pictures becuase the dust in the air makes them seem too blurry.

John, the oem case saver is like 1/8" alumiunum stamped soda can. that wasa 520 DID Xring chain w/ less than 30 hours on it. oiled and kept in good condition. No idea why it snapped, but thank god it happened in a corner and not on the face of that monster uphill double

Utah: I kinda figured you would look through the gallery and pic out your favorites.

Gotta get my photoshop running so I can make those sequences. When I upgraded my mac OSX, it disabled my cracked photoshop and none of the other cracks seem to work right. anyway, my 30 day trial ended on thursday, gotta uninstall the whole thing and install again for another 30 day time limit.

Its really weird that the chain broke like that. FWIW, the X-ring and O-ring chains are generally not as strong as a quality standard chain. I ran a Renthal "Works" chain on my 330R for several years without an issue. Even a week out in the dunes doing holeshot after holeshot with an extended swingarm and paddle tires did phase it. I'll probably go with that chain again this time or maybe a D.I.D NZ series since I had good luck with that when I was flat tracking the TRX270R. Neither of them is a "ring" type chain so they're perfect for MX since you don't do water crossings anyway. It sucks that Honda cheaped out on the case saver, I guess they were trying to save a couple of ounces on it. Like I said, if you need someone to fix it just let me know.

Yamaha cheaped out...I have an 06 YZ 450..the super-duper hotness yellow plastic 50th anniversary limited edition one. (yeah, Im a homo and paid $200 more for yellow plastic (well kinda)).

I got the Xring chain simply because they were supposed to last longer than normal chains, watercrossing or not. Guess maybe keeping water out of the inside, keeping lube inside? Either way...moot point cause the fucking snapped, my gut just tells me this was a freaky thing and not to worry too much about it.

This week Ill wash the bike super good, take an assload of detail pictures of wire/hose routes, then tear it apart and get the engine out of the frame. I don't think Im going to actually take the motor apart until I get a new case and have the time to split the motor and re-assemble it right away. Don't want crank and tranny parts just laying around lest they get moved around/lost or I forget how they came apart.

I don't know why I confused yours and Utah's. Go watch Supercross and forget your bikes' destruction.

ya that is really weird Nate, my chain im sure has as many hours as yours too. For the hell of it, I would contact DID and see what they say.

Those jumps were awesome though, such a bummer end to an otherwise awesome day.

Nice pics but ouch on the carnage. Was your chain tension too tight? Seems like it might have cracked on bottoming out on a jump or something if it were, but I think most bikes now a days have their chain getting looser through the stroke. I forget off hand where I heard that, so it might be wrong.

The chain is tightest when the swingarm, front sprocket, and rear sprocket are all in a perfectly straight line. As you go up or down from that point it gets looser. When my R is at stock height and you sit on it the chain tightens up, when its lowered for ice racing and you sit on it it loosens up.

Chain was definatly not too tight, as I rode all day with no issues untill literally "next to last lap" before I was going to put the bike away and shoot Utah for a while.

Didn't case any jumps within a few laps of breaking it either, but I did overjump that middle double a couple times earlier in the day with no damage.

Really I have no idea why, Im just going to chalk it up to shit luck and go on with fixing it up. For all I know a rock got inbetween the chain and sprocket or something goofy like that? Who knows. But it shouldn't have broken from tension, age, or lack of lube.

Seems I can get the cases for about $275 on ebay for a new pair. Plus obviously need a chain and sprocket set and the swingarm guards and metal guide is bent up. And the "case saver"...then again it was proven useless in this instance.
