I figured there is a wealth of knowledge about digital cameras from most of you guys on here so I wanted some advice. I'm looking to get my brother (28 years old) a digital camera (point and shoot). I know most of you are into the SLR stuff but figured you're knowledgeable enough to help me out. I was looking for something compact, easy to use, decent battery life, and relatively inexpensive. On a scale from 1 to 10, I was hoping to find one that the picture quality is around an 8 to 9. I know that probably doesn't help much, but you probably get the idea.

I was looking at the Nikon CoolPix S210 as I can find one for around $150, has a rechargeable battery, takes SD memory cards, and picture quality and ease of use seem to be pretty good. It's also super compact. Thoughts? Comments? Flaming?

well as far as point and shoots are , nikon and canon are pretty dominant.. alot of people like some of the newer sony's , but after their major recall and lens issues last year im not a big fan. One thing to think of is what the camera is actually being used for, if its just for generic family photo's than any decent nikon or canon will work. But if ur looking to get somethin that can also be used on vacation or with action photo's than alot is the be considered. I have a Canon SD750 and bang for the buck.. this defintly is my most favorite point and shoot ive owned. the battery life is nice and long, has alot of the famous more expensive camera's features and is pretty nice looking. dont look too much into a high mega pixel camera and let that sway you from quality. I think ull be safe to say a Canon is your best bet. If i didnt get fired from my last job, i could tottally hook u up with a bawlin ass point and shoot for dirt cheap, but with prices and sales nowadays u shouldnt have an issue finding what u want

Mark, sucks you got fired. But he'll mostly use the camera in the city to take pics of himself and friends, etc. Occasionally of landscape stuff on vacation, but he's by no means a "photo buff." Just likes to document his life/travels.

Canon G9

I was looking for something in the $100-$200 price range...but that's a sweet camera.

I was talking to my bro's girlfriend last night and it seems that portability and size are really the only thing that he cares about. He keeps complaining that the old one (like 4 years old) is too big to carry anywhere so he ends up just taking pics with his phone (blackjack II). Since that's the case, I'm going to get the Nikon CoolPix S210 unless I can find a good deal on the Canon SD1000.

Thanks!

I have pretty much the same question. I was looking for a nice but not too expensive camera. Probably around $200. I dont care much about the size and whether its compact or not, just something that has good features and takes good pictures. I dont know much about cameras and all the slr lens stuff but i was looking at the fuji finepix s1000fd. Not too big but has a 12x optical lense and take 10mp pics. From what i read it also has alot of options for the more advanced user which might come in handy down the road when i learn more. Just wanted to see what tou guys thought of fuji and if you have heard anything about this camera in particular. Thanks

Well after looking around im still interested in the fuji because of its features and price. I just have a few questions for you guys. The only negative i see to this camera compaired to say the canon a650(which is also another option) is that it doesnt have an optical stabilization system. I believe i read it has an ISO boosting stabilizer. Now i generally understand what that means but how important is that. It seems to take more effect and night and at full zoom? Thanks
