Ladies and Gentelmen, Be carful out there... I got lucky i didnt die, or no damage to Katrina either... Heres the Story. Kindof Long. sorry i need to vent
Going 280 East to my boys house to play poker about 1130ish raining semi hard for about 2 hours... Im in the middle lane doing about 45/50, wsnt really paying attention, but i was going slow. Car in the Slow lane about a length behind me puts blinker on to take exit 4 in roseland. take my eyes off the mirror and put them back on the road and i see a deer jump out right in front of me. Swerve left braking and my brakes lock up. Im headed to the wall, counter steer right and start to powerslide. Im looking at the Door of the car that was behind me. Luckily hes on the exit ramp lane by now.. I slide over the 3 lanes to the slow lane, start to regain SOME control but not enough... Now Im sliding/spinning back and fourth and finish stradeling the left shoulder and fast lane(rear tires in fast lane/front tires in grass) I have been in close calls before, but i dunno why this one really fucked me up... i couldnt move for 10/15 min... it just keeped replaying in my head over and over and over again... I finaly made it to mikes house, shooked as shit i couldnt go home and go to bed so i stayed and played some poker for a bite to help clear my head... ended up winning $100... drove home almost stoped and called for a ride i was so fucked up.. PS its only ONE exit i need to drive to get from his house to my house... Couldnt sleep one bit last night, nightmare after nightmare of it only diffrent out comes... I had my Dad take me to work this morning... I feel ok now i went to the store when i got home and im comfortable in my car. Its a realality check that I/we are not in control of these things, and i hate that feeling... Its one thing im im doing stupid shit and I fuck up and crash/die thats OK to me, i would be in "control". I would crash because somthing I did...
Anyway be carful out there everyone

yea i saw your away message..glad you made it out. however, a couple months ago, my Xterra wasn't so fortunate. I hit a small deer going about 60 and split the damn thing in half  The Xterra turned out to be ok, a broken corner light and bumper.. oh well

I'll bet they're a bit messy now too :D
I had a similar experience on a Ducati a few years ago, probably doing around 170ish when a fairing partially detached and the wind force almost forced me off the road. I was literally sick to my stomache for an hour or so after.
Ironicly enough, when I totaled my LS1 a couple months ago after hitting a guardrail at 80ish, doing a 360 and hitting a second guardrail, I grabbed my phone, took off my seatbelt, and jumped out of the car like nothing happened. For some reason I was calm for the entire thing, both during and after.
Anyway glad you're OK, I travel that part of 280 quite a bit and that's road completly sucks in bad weather.

I know it's instinct to wail on the brakes and turn, but the best thing you can do when a deer jumps out in front of you in a highway, high speed, or poor traction situation is to just close your eyes and hit the damn thing.
There are tons of deer in my area of NJ (the sticks), I have personally hit like 6 or 7. My inlaws are in the 20 kills range, my father in law hit 3 at once (luke bought that car..mustang GT). I hit one with a motorcycle. My GVR4 snapped one in half. Anyway...
Not a year passes that I don't hear of someone I know in town seriously wrecking/totaling thier car trying to avoid a deer. What would normally be minor headlight/bumper/hood damage turns into head-on collisions with other cars, flipped barrelrolling cars, spins into the woods, and nasty bouts with utility poles.
Extremely rare to be injured by hitting a deer alone. But you get pretty jacked trying to avoid the deer and hitting cars/poles/trees. Ususally the car wins when it hits deer. Usually the wood/metal wins when you hit the pole/tree/other car.
Word to the wise....mow those stupid fuckers down!

It would've died if it got stuck in my car until I got home! The rifle would've made sure of it. Those fuckers are like suburban rats!! I'm ready to start hunting but I don't want to get up so early in the morning.

haha yeah. forrest rats.
they are disgusting.
i used to ride my bike in the reservation here. i've seen one run FULL speed into a tree and fall over. it was the most ridiculous thing i've ever seen. full fucking pace right into a tree. i have no idea how the hell it recovered from that but it got up after a minute and started running away again.

When I hit one in my GVR4, I broke it's back hip bones. it was flopping around on ground trying to get up like a fish out of water.
next car that drives by stoppes, it's a contractor. he says "I have a gun in the van", so Im like cool. put this thing out of it's misery, drag it out of road, and Ill get going. Guy comes back with a ROOFING NAIL GUN! After like 7 shots to head, deer is still flopping around. It was horrible.
Thankfully a guy came out of his house to see WTF was going on, he had a big pocketknife with him and slit the deer's throat. It died fast then.
All this while my wife sits in the car crying. Stupid deer.
soooooooooooooo glad you're ok, nick. What would we do without you? :(
Here is some food for thought. Most insurance companies DO NOT pay if you get into an accident while swerving from a deer. You definately are better off hitting the damn thing. Well, unless you are lucky(or unlucky? :? ) like nick and not hit anything.

its also important to make sure your car is mechanically tip top... I had a bad rear caliper spin me around a few times in a regular quick stop to avoid a dear. the best thing to do is to keep your lane and hit the fucker, to my surprise when I hit the brakes it was like someone threw up my ebrake. check your rear calipers!!

hey man....glad to see you came out of it ok. damn deer can be a pain in the ass around here. and you're right, its scary sometimes to realize how NOT in control we are sometimes. like when we're doing 120-130 down the highway, we don't realize that if we had to stop suddenly or make a quick turn...we're pretty much fucked. food for thought.
but ask kyle (iboostdoyou) about my run in with "bambi." keep in mind its always a good excuse for the cops too. "damned deer ran right out in front of me...i couldn't stop!"

Here in NJ in Bergen County I am constantly in fear of cops and radar. My folks got a cabin out in PA, and I started driving like an ass around the backroads.... fun as hell until I has two really close calls with deer. Then I then noticed theres a dead deer every mile or so on every road. So now I drive like a pussy out there too because the deer are EVERYWHERE.
I miss living in the Bronx where there are no deer and no traffic enforcement. I could drive like an asshole every day on my way to work. Now I lost all my skillz.

i hit a deer in my truck over a year ago when the eclipse was at aamco for a week getting a clutch. wasnt to much damage, but estimate was still over 2 grand. insurance payed every penny and my rate didnt go up a cent. apparantly hitting a deer is considered an unavoidable accident to the insurance companys. so listen to nate and mow the fucker down.

I've never been to DS or Blairstown before and on my way to DS last week, I loved all the winding roads going towards Nate's Shop. And at the same time though, that very thought continued to cross my mind, what if a deer pops out? Well, I'm in my dad's Landcruser and I know I rather hit the fucker, but it's not my car. Alternatives? I thougth to myself just get the fuck out the way or honk the horn. And after hangin out for a bit and bugging Brent, I finally leave DS. But, I didn't realize how dark it had gotten. So now I'm nervous, never been in this situation before and I sat in the car thinking well, there's not alot of road to maneuver on. So, I ended up driving like a bitch all the way back out to 80 and then I hauled ass back home, to justify my slow ass driving! :P ...If I had my car I wouldn't have thougth twice!
if im going to die in my car thats the way i wanna go.. Full throttle at 130 plus.. not 40 trying not to hit a dear, you know? +1
If I'm gonna go out in my DSM, I'm gonna go out with a bang  and Helite it's good to hear you made it out ok and that your feeling better

Jeff was whooping ass, then realized he couldn't make the turn at 90mph down Sylvan Way and locked up the rear brakes. I may have busted up the 'maro...but hot damned did I beat BBP!
