View Full Version : Huge Spring Meet Idea
gvr4737

Me and a few of my friends were discussing the other night how we all post on about 15 different forums or more and how we attend different meets which usually turn out pretty good.. we than discussed how it would be cool if we could desinate one place and a certain day to have a HUGE meet combining all the different cars we are into... that includes Dsms,240's,galants,honda's,rotory, mustangs etc....
We have been searching for that perfect spot and figured that their is a
" park and Ride" on RT23 towards the wayne area that is usually empty certain days and certain times... this would be a perfect area because it is huge and visible from the road. also RT 23 is easily found from major highways.. we are looking into that place and see when would be a perfect time/day to do this.. and having a meet like every week or every other could stir up a nice time...
anyone think this is a good idea and would be in on meeting there???

If you're planning on something this large, you might want to look into obtaining permits, otherwise there's nothing that'll prevent the police from kicking us all out and labeling it as some sort of illegal street racing meet, even if we all show up at noon and there's a 3-mile backup on rt 23.

well the lot is big... but easily could get 150+ cars
guess if its a public place they can't keep us from parking there
iboostdoyou
01-13-2006, 07:03 PM
yea permit is the safest way to go. Maybe find a large park somewhere that has a large parking lot and maybe a covered sitting area/grill's for eating. I know there are plenty of them in the area, it is just a matter of which one we could obtain a permit for and/or consume alcohol at legally  . Just some food for thought

Def need permits or whatever even if its a big lot and your just parking. Cops will still ticket.

For this past years waterfest, there was a good 150-200 cars in a hotel on route 27 here in edison and there were gtis doing tray-assisted donuts and all around causing mischief for quite awhile and cops didnt do anything about it. Note: its not because there weren't no cops around either, the hotel is right next to the police station so anyone who travels through or has traveled through edison knows that they dont do shit but theyre everywhere. Theres also a muscle car meet at the local pathmark/autozone that draws a pretty decent amount of anti-tree-friendly camaros and mustangs and they all do donuts/burnouts infront of the cops but I think they have a permit for that shit
Just have to pick a good town really, a quiet hillbilly town will unlikely like a huge car meet.

Maybe if you find a park large enough to accomidate alot of cars?

Well we will start looking for some good places that would work for everyone and than look into getting permits and what not
iboostdoyou
01-14-2006, 11:53 AM
that meet at the freehold mall is gonna get broken up so quickly... Have you ever been in a Mall parking lot after hours? Security makes you leave if your just hanging around, I can only imagine how fast its gonna get broken up if there are 100 people there  There have got to be some local parks available for us to occupy, but its gotta be somewhere accessible for people all over jersey, or we won't get any of those south jersey cars (aka half of rutgers)
iboostdoyou
01-14-2006, 12:42 PM
well I dont mean the sticks of south jersey, no one lives down there... i consider trenton pretty much as far south in nj that I would ever need to go, so Rutgers compared to where I am is south

imho meets suck. you either, eat food then look at cars with more money into them than yours...or look at cars than eat...or just look at cars. like that one hooters wayne supra/rotary meet, it was sick to see all those cars there, goin up to like ~1000hp, but after like 5 minutes, i was bored as shit. what about a cruise...a nice, law abiding cruise on untraveled backroads or highways. meets are just a way to get possible tickets doing nothing (i know you can get tickets just cruising too, but if the location is right, it shouldnt be a problem), and look at cars that have alot more money into them than yours. a bbq down near blairstown would be awesome, if there is a park around there, or somewhere in sussex because cops are rare, and the views are nice. because, if there is a nice scheduled cruise involved than a meet, or a meet/cruise/meet, it gets people more involved after they have seen your car actually functioning and not racking up "show" points. and at meets, its always groups of friends standing around, when they can be doing that at their local dunkin donuts. so lets get a big meet/cruise going and maybe more will get involved.
shane
01-14-2006, 02:42 PM
i understand what you are saying, but you see the problem with a cruise is that people will want to start doing pulls or see who can take the next corner at mach 3. i believe the best idea would be a bbq of some sort at a park. have something like you bring the buns, i will get some chips, i'll take care of some soda/beer, ect. just hang out, take some uber cool pictures, and eat.
EDIT: we need some new pictures under club photos.
twizzle
01-14-2006, 02:44 PM
yeh i just edited my post, i know people will end up pulling, but if your on the right roads, it shouldnt be that risky, it just all depends on the highway. so schedule it up as a huge bbq, then whoever wants to cruise and risk their license, can.
iboostdoyou
01-14-2006, 02:51 PM
i dont find meets boring, I like them, good chance to not only admire other cars, but talk to some cool people that generally know their shit. A combination would be cool though, maybe a meet at a designated location to BS for a while, then after an hour or so, head out for a long cruise. But I think we would have more trouble with the police driving around with 50 cars than we would in a remote parking lot.
However, there are plenty of 1 or 2 lane roads that go from route 23 up into new york that are incredibly twisty and discreet that could be utilized without any risk of people doing stupid pulls, and low risk of cops.

what about a cruise...a nice, law abiding cruise on untraveled backroads or highways.
We do something like that with all the GVR4 guys in the summer in Harriman State Park. In '05 we finished off with a BBQ at my place. The Bear Mtn Inn has a big lot and it's like 50 cents to park there so I don't see how the cops can kick you out of that lot if you paid and you're not acting like a jackass. Then right out of that lot are some fantastic roads to cruise through Harriman State Park but again, you have to respect the other people who use the park and not drive around like a bunch of a-holes. If you put something together I'll come down, Mark. I can't promise I'll make it every week if its a weekly thing but I'll definitely come by.

I get twizzle's Argument. And it does hold true in the sense that...you really can't control anyone but yourself and your car. Theres always someone who wants to have bigger balls than the next guy.
But seriusly...You all have fast cars...natural instinct is to race it against another fast car...to see how you hold up.
I was down in Maryland with my buddy for a semi decent 360z/g35 meet at Altered atmosphere. They had a dyno day/BBq right at the shop...then after wards they took us out on a cruise down the highway thur some local roads and then up a Moutain.
20 z's all in a row was pretty neat...and everyone was pretty well behaved on the single lane roads...The highway was insane...i don't think the average speed was below 110.
Anyway my point is...it can be done...you just need to respect whoeevr put it together and enjoy the chance for it to happen. I think it's the best feeling when the few meets i've been to where we drove around together...and it's a decently populated area...Everyone looks at you like.
"hey that car looks like the next one...and the next one...and OMG THERES A WHOLE LINE OF THEM.
Just my Opinion.
I'm down for a spring meet/cruise/bbq.
maybe the hand of god will come down and help me finish my car.

this is the second marlboro meet that got broken up almost when i got there. and like the 234324th meet ive been to, to be broken up. im done with this fast and furious bullshit plus that has to be the worst area ever, cops have been kicking people out around that area for a long time. its always chosen cause all the rich fags dont want to travel far, there are plenty of farm towns around. time to start having meets at the track, when i have a car thats worth bringing.

a buddy of mine's mother works for the town, and can get us a permit to use any parking lot/field in the Parsippany School District. Maybe we can do it at one of the high school's here in parsippany. Route 80, 287, 46, and 10 go directly through the town, so getting here shouldnt be a problem from people coming from anywhere. I dont know about where we could cruise afterwards, but doing it there is a good option being that the permit can be achieved easily, its easy to get to, and the parking lot is huge
Talking about large paved spaces, has anybody been to the Floyd Bennett abandoned airfield in Brooklyn? It's open any time, granted it's somewhat of a long drive but it's huge. Check it on google maps, at the very end of Flatbush avenue.

did a quick mapquest, high point is almost exactly an hour from parsippany. 80west for 8 miles onto route 15, and then route 15 for 17 miles, and the other 15 or so other miles are backroads. Not really that bad of a drive, but for all those southern dwelling dsm'ers, thats a freakin hike home, maybe we can pick a cruise spot a little more towards the middle of nj :?:

AWD 4TW

I dont believe we need a permit we can find out. We are from jefferson its in north NJ, Its accesable from rt287 to rt23 or rt80 to rt15 (which is a much easier way) we could probably meet near a one of the highways and than caravan there. You cant even see the actually place from the road just signs.

is it rt 15 north? that would be even better for a high point cruise after.

alright lets decide on a location/date for this thing... the sooner we get this decided, the more clubs we can get in on it and the more people will show up. I know for a fact I can get a good representation from the supraforums if I have a decent amount of notice... i'm sure the evoM guys would be cool with it too. Most likely can get a pretty large vw following, not sure about those suby guys, they never show up for meets, but I mean thats a pretty good base of cars right there 8) .

i'm assuming you mean the 12th? 12th is the sunday. stock=poop has this posted as a feeler on supraforums, and there seems to be a pretty decent response to it so far. Any suggestions on where to hold this? I can probably get the permit to use the high school in parsippany, but I mean whatever you guys want.
AWD 4TW
02-07-2006, 01:40 AM
i worded that wrong, i ment have it saturday because most dont have work on sunday, so there would be no rush to leave. I think the HS might be a good idea. Its probably closer to most of you than out spots would be.
iboostdoyou
02-07-2006, 10:32 AM
yea the main driving force for it to be somewhere in Parsippany is that we can almost definitely get a permit to be there, and the town just happens to be at the crossroads to a few larger highways. The feeler should go up on EvoM today, supra feeler was posted last night, VW feeler will go up today also. I would really opt against inviting the honda guys. I know there are some really nice one's out there and some cool people that drive them, but for the vast majority of the honda tuners I'm afraid of inviting. If you guys know of any honda people you want to invite by all means go for it, but I dont think i'm gonna post it on honda-tech. Might also post this on the sr20 forums, I know a bunch of guys from there so I might just have one of them post it up. Any ideas where you want to cruise? high point?
AWD 4TW

probably a combination. Probably take route 15, depends though, I might make a few dry runs up there to get a feel for which roads to take. Should take about an hour give or take.
edit: wow, could I have said 'take' a few more times?!?! eh whatever, I suck

tilli, we went through high point when we went all the way up rt23. after franklin, or even in franklin, it turned into a single lane, then varies from single to two lane, no one is ever on it, and its a wide nicely paved cruise road. idk if we need to take back roads, no one is ever around high point as it is.

02-08-2006, 07:00 PM
Yeah we did just take 23 pretty much to its end. There really was no one one the roads but it was also 4AM lol. It had lots of sweet scenery on the way tho. So does everyone agree on the 11th of this month, its a saturday? I think we should figure the spot and times before we get too many ideas about what can happen and where we can go.
Mark wtf are you talking about.

02-08-2006, 08:03 PM
yea I was thinking about making a dry run up there. Maybe a few of us can meet and make a trip to high point to see how it would turn out. Its better to work out the kinks now, before we try to do it with 50 cars. What are you guys doing early friday afternoon? Maybe leave local around noon-ish to beat the traffic either there or back. I'm gonna be working all day saturday and all day sunday

twizzle
02-09-2006, 10:19 PM
well 23 is straight forward, you really cant get lost if you keep going straight. i dont know how it was, but i drove all the way to port jervis and i know we passed high point. awd 4tw can probably elaborate more since he wasnt the one driving.
AWD 4TW

Yeah we just took 23 all the way up we passed high point maybe halfway to port jervus. I dont really remember much just twizzle freaking the fuck out halfway through from sleep deprevation.

CCDSM is planning a spring meet with the NYC guys. Maybe you can get in touch with both clubs and try to make this one big tri-state shindig.

I would be down for that as long as they hold it in Southern CT. That cruise would be slightly longer than high point, but hey, whatever works, especially if they are gonna have food  . I'm gonna keep an eye on it and see if they come up with a meeting place

OK question for you guys.
If a park had an admission of lets say $5 a car to get into the park would you all be willing to pay that fee?
iboostdoyou
02-10-2006, 03:47 PM
for me I would rather pay to get into a park and have a right to be there legally then go somewhere free and get kicked out of the meet after driving 2 hours to get there  . I probably speak for everyone else, I dont think $5 is unreasonable as long as its a good spot and there wont be any cop troubles.

I don't think admission of $5 is asking alot. What were your ideas about food/beverages? Were you thinking of a BBQ type gathering or something simple.
97gstchick
02-10-2006, 04:20 PM
A BBQ trype of thing. The park I'm looking at has
a Par 3 Golf Course, Miniature Golf Course, 2 Little League Fields, 1 Regulation lighted softball field, 7 beach volleyball courts, 8 tennis courts, skateboard park, 2 basketball courts, 3 picnic areas with bathrooms, a new soccer field, 1000 feet of beachfront with concession stand, bathrooms and new deck.
being able to use all that, legally be there, meet a bunch of other dsmer's for 5 bucks??? to me it's worth it.
Usually over at ccdsm when we make the sign ups of who is going we put down what we're bringing. Everyone brings something. So then we have alot of everything and it works out well.
When we do the sign up lists I will jump between the 3 boards and post who signed up and what they're bringing just so we dont have 10 people bringing ketchup.. lol you know.
It works out really well; because everyone contributed and it wasnt just one person who bought everything.

well I don't want to give directions yet due to it not being definate yet. I wanna go and scope out the place myself make sure its a nice size for all of us.
but we're looking into the stratford area of CT. Which is just alittle past bridgeport.. But Im still hunting for a spot. It's not definate yet.

Yea I didnt need a specific location, general area was fine thank you. 1 hour 48 minutes from my house, thats not that bad all things considered.
Greg - I really dont care how much I have to spend on gas, just using the distance as an estimate as to how much I'm going to have to set aside for fuel. It takes me longer to get down to the shore than it does a meet 2 states up, so I can deal
I know a bunch of you guys are also on nycdsm - turbomike, probably MikeL etc., maybe you guys can organize to have us jersey guys meet up with the nyc crew on our cruise up 287?

Once a date is figured out, I'll spread the good word to the GVR-4 folks. They're a cool crowd to hang out with too, especially when they have their big east coast meet in the fall.
Speaking of which, maybe you can go over there (www.galantvr4.org (http://www.galantvr4.org)) and speak with Harry Blanchard (number3). At the last meet we had, he managed to get some sponsors going including Slowboy, TRE, ThreeSpeed, DSMotorsports and a few other guys. They donated some pretty slick pieces for a raffle.
