and here i am thinking you were going to put an actual blower on the car...wasn't sure how...but it'd be cool. superchargers rule! 8)

yes! half the efficiency of a turbo is awesome! i love that!

supercharger: spool up time ~ 0 seconds 8)

gtluke
01-23-2006, 06:15 PM
what are you joking? thats because it makes 5 psi
if i had a turbo on my galant with its power gain equal to a GM blower, (maybe like a 13g or smaller) it would spool to 5 psi the same, but make double the HP
you can not justify inefficiency with some bogus spool time.

I'm surprised no one said noise. I cant stand the sound superchargers make. Stupid whining sound. My 14b did that before I blew it up (the first time)

i think they sound cool, theyre probably a lot more reliable than turbo cars too.

rotorocker

depends what boost you run.

gtluke
01-23-2006, 11:01 PM
they are more reliable because they don't make as much power

Muggus
01-23-2006, 11:44 PM
So then Luke why dont you race this with your turbo stang, its only superchagered it cant be making any real power.

turbo's are outlawed in top fuel

i don't know, i can't imagine any top fuel/funny car teams switching to turbo's even if they could.

gtluke

what class allows turbos that isn't DOMINATED by turbos?
i know in mustang racing turbocharged cars are SEVERELY weighed down and limited on like fucking everything.

chrisAWD
01-24-2006, 12:38 AM
there's a bit of a difference between mustang door slammers and a top fuel dragster. besides, in mustang racing they don't run 90% nitro, or 85% or whatever it is these days.

Utah Joe

top fuel cars would run turbo's if they were allowed to I am sure. Just like top fuel boat, some of which run monster turbo's It takes about 800hp to turn the 14-71 blower that a TF car runs. TF cars are so ristricted anyway. Even running 4.5 second, they are very limited by the rules. Only 500CI motors, limited ammount of nitro, limits on the pulley sizes on the blower, tire size, etc... I bet the caould run 3's if they had less rules. But then they would explode on every other run and it would be too expensive and dangerous.

chrisAWD
01-24-2006, 12:44 AM
i see your point, but even if they allowed fuelers to use turbo's tommorrow(assuming turbo's even exist that can flow enough air for 7-8k horse), i bet it would be years before a single turbo car started competing competitively. think of the years and years and years of experience these pit crews and chiefs have with the blowers, would basically just have to start over.

It doesn't really matter, those cars make more HP than they ever use. The whole key to a winning car in top fuel is keeping the motor together and getting the clutch right. That clutch is slipping from the starting line to the parachutes, they're not even using the full potential of the motors.

Honestly I wonder how much faster they can get those cars to go; I think in coming years we're going to see what many other forms of motorsports have seen in the last few years, an actual slowing of the cars down. Why? Two reasons. One, the human body can only take so much. How many more G's can a driver sustain safely launching a 4 second dragster. Two, it levels the playing field by allowing teams with less funding for parts and R&D to still field a competative car. How can Joe Racer compete with teams that spent more money doing R&D on say, cylinder head design than Joe Racer spent on his entire car?

good points pete....i was gonna mention that fact about getting the power to the pavement last night, but got sidetracked.

Sure, but that has nothing to do with the turbo vs SC argument.

definatley. they have a slight advantage over the cobalt from the factory...but all depends on driver at that point.

holy shit. Is that the new quad turbo V8 powered floor jack? That thing must be one hell of a ride from the driving position shown in that pic. I knew top fuel was dangerous, but dude...he's steering wiht the vlave cover. good thing it will go 3's, woiudn't want to burn hands on the vlave covers, but they should be good for 3 seconds.

If I remember right, that's a quad turbo Chevy based motor that lives in a Pro Stock Camaro. NHRA actually made him detune that motor significantly; I believe it's capable of close to three THOUSAND horsepower 8)

Edit: Found the link http://popularhotrodding.com/enginemast ... _turbo_bb/ (http://popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/chevrolet/bigblock/0305em_turbo_bb/)

Very cool stuff; no gaskets in the entire motor for example.

3 thousand huh? wow.....he's almost got half the power of a fueler car

the other thing i was thinking was that the turbo's would have a bitch of a time dealing with the exhaust gas temps from nitro. I believe I read that the flame front from the exhaust tips of fuelers is around 7k degrees.....buh bye turbine wheel.

Once again. Top fuel boats have been using turbos for years
