Ill get a current pic tommorrow. Always a little sad to see another one go to the scrapyard, but it's for the best. You can't hold onto stupid shit like money pit cars forever. Rich got a lot of mileage and use out of the car, not like it sat on jackstands all the time broken.

In the end parting out these "highly modified" cars is going to be more common for sure. Rich's car was certianly not worth the $ as a running car that he's getting for the parts. Same with my GVR4, same with utah's dsm, Rene's dsm, ect. I know Im glad I got $7600 out of my GVR4 rather than have the car running. Utah feels the same. Rene also.

Eventualy you just get sick of pumping more and more money into a 15 year old car. Got to call it quits some time.

agreed,

Rich can cry about his car all the way to the bank. While you are crying rich you can pay off your lotus and put a nice down payment on an evo if you wanted. But no you should hang on to the car and continue to pour money into it souly b/c it is a dsm and you are not as cool if you get rid of yours. hahahahahahaha Poor luke and kris are all alone in dsm land now, waaaaaaaaaaaa.

gtluke

utah is just mad because he failed MISERABLY at owning a dsm.
how fast did your $7,000 talon go? HHAHAAAAA
:P

and you didn't MAKE money parting out your car. neither did nate
you guys are now doing reverse grassroots math on your cars.
just because you bought parts and bounced them through your car and labeled them used doesn't negate the initial cost.
if you bought a gt32 off nate at cost, used it for a month and sold it for the same price, you didn't make a dollar. you just got your money back.

thats like me going to walmart and buying a TV and bringing it home, and because i can't figure out how to turn it on i returned it and got my money back it doesn't mean i just made $400 on the TV
it means i just wasted a bunch of time and probably shouldn't have made the purchase in the first place.

it would be one thing if you bought a talon and brought it home and parted it out and came out at the end of the day with extra money. or you did what rich did, and actually got use of out of it first and then sold it for 50% of what he paid years ago then it is claimed money.

but you and nate didnt' get any use out of your parts first. you just bought it and sold it for pretty much the same exact amount. that doesn't add up to money in the bank. thats just a month of wasted time.

cars and parts depreciate over time. we all lose money. but i am fully aware that this was richard's best way of getting the most for his car. i agree. rich made out. he got his money's worth out of every single one of his parts and then recouped a bunch of it. great job rich.
but to somehow justify what you and nate did as a great idea is comical. nobody made a dollar on any of that shit. you just ran up a bill and erased it without barely getting any use. i can't recall either one of you making money off of any parts that came with the car. i know neither of you sold the transmission, i think utah sold the motor minus the cost of the new parts put in a week before disassembly. most of the other shit left with the car, which you lost money on.

now someone like phil will make money off that galant. he'll put $3500 into it, drive it for a year and sell it for $6,000
he gets a years worth of out it which to me is worth about $2,000, a rough estimate on a shitty car payment or something... and actually profit off the parts on the car after the sale.

but at the end of the day if i had a few thousand dollars in my pocked but i had to drive a saturn or a saab instead of a cool fast car, somehow i don't think i came out on top.

nathan made good money off his green car. he should have used that as an example and it wouldn't have set me off into an internet rant :)
he got use, and extra money at the end of the day. win win.

the both of you piss me off to no end with your math, either deflating the cost of assembling a car and inflating the cost of disassembling one.

failed miserably? hahahahahahaha Trust me luke that does not hurt my feelings one bit. When it comes to dsm's the people who fail are the ones who spend endlessly, have a non running pile of crap, and dont know when to quit.

Not only did I make money on the car, it was a considerable ammount too. I bought it for $1500, put roughly $4000 in it and parted it for over $8000. Not counting the freebie parts I gave nate for hooking me up and helping me out. Furthermore, if I did not make money on it, I dont care. Fact is what money was in the car could have been better spent elsewhere. Its as simple as that.

I took that money, paid off a chunk of debt and bought a new CRF-450 with it. Then had a blast all summer riding/racing it. hahahahahaha, oh ya, my failure in the dsm world depresses the fuck out of me.

BTW, nate and I bought a saturn and a saab? hahahahaha you bought a hyundai, so who the fuck giving shit too?

I still have my mustang, which dispite being 40 years old is 10 times more reliable and fun than a DSM. Rich has his lotus and nate has his yellow talon and evo. So whats you beef? Now we all only have one or two fast cars?

Nate Crisman

I don't think I made money on my GVR4, no way. REbuilding then parting out is throwing money out the window at best. I put more than $5000 into it during the last rebuild, plus all the parts that I scavenged for free or had left over from the talon. Plus the work involved. I haven't ever made even an attempt to figure out what it cost me to rebuild any of the cars I have parted out, so not sure where you have ever heard me speak of this magical "profit math" your speaking of. I doubt I have every made a profit, at best...every part out is a wash or break even.

I simply look at it like this:
I can part it out and get $7500 cash in hand
or
I can have a running 1992 GVR4 after I put in more work and $.

It was a pretty easy choice to make, as Im not forced to drive a saab or saturn, remember that 03 Evo8? That was the main force that mde me decide to part my GVR4..I simply didn't want to drive it over the new evo and could use the cash more than the car. The saab works fine as our backup car when the evo is down, but it's not our main transport.

The money was worth more than the car to all of us. I don't have an ounce of sentimental value for GVR4's or old shitbox dsm's. It's just a car, and no 1992 mitsubishi is worth $7500+.

Im not trying to play #'s game to make the car more valueable, Im just trying to justify the reasoning to part out. Everyone will get to a point that the car is worth less to them than the sum of the parts.

completely true. the Used page on my website does most of the selling for me. Ill end up getting over $1300 in stock parts out of the 1990 FWD I just parted out..bought the car for $500. Im keeping the shortblock, head too long with some other minor parts.

you have to be persistant with adds and ebay to to get rid of stuff. And you need to know when to cut you losses and just sell parts for whatever you can get.

Not to mention when I pull new parts off the shelf and put them on my cars, then sell them later in a part out..I rarely take any loss at all. My wholesle cost is often almost exactly what I can sell the used part for after a season of use. That's why I part out my racecar every fall. why not, I rced all season on the parts, and I can recoup the investment every year in cash while writing the whole expense off as an advertizing expense. This last year's part out I MADE $1200 or so, enough to cover the paintjob. 2005 raceing didn't cost me a dime as of now to build the car.

All told since 2002 my 90 talon racecar has currently cost me about $4500 and I raced it for 3 full seasons. Constantly selling parts off to buy new parts then selling them fter they are worn/used. Going to add about $1500 to that total for the parts to rebuild the car for 2006.

oh fucking stop it with that bullshit. You have taken tons of parts from nate for free and then sold them later over the years. If I had a fucking dollar for every time you begged nate to give you something lying around the shop I would be a millionare. I never cost nate 5 cents. He gave me parts at his cost or perhaps a little over and for that I gave nate about $1000 worth of stuff off of my car. My rx-7 wheels and brand new tires that cost me $800 together, the big rotors, spindles, etc... There was also other small BS that I cant even remember now. So dont even try to make it sound like I ripped off nate. I never intended to part my car out when I did, but hey it ran like shit from the day I bought it and I was not wasting anymore time on it as it was no longer any fun. It you would like to call that giving up, no problem. I call it knowing when to cut and run. The only thing that was left to do on that car was replace the motor, and I did not want to spend that kind of cash.

SHIT.

i know you were nice and gave him a bunch of leftover parts. but its just strange that you brag about the money you made of his kindness. i'm sure nate doesn't give a shit but damn would keep my mouth shut. and then you accuse me of doing the same thing? just randomly? you said this last year and asked you to give me an example and you said "tons of shit" and couldn't name a single thing.

How many stock 1g intercoolers did you take for your mustang buddies?

you have bummed more parts than can possibly be counted. Fine, most of them were just lying around and not doing anything. You were welcome to them, but dont get on your pedestal and start acusing me of taking advantage of people. so i'm guilty too.
but you wave your profits around like its something to be admired and i think its insulting. we all helped you with your car and then you just bailed and took it apart and waved your profits at us.

trust me I do not expect to be admired with any money made off of my car. Nate knows that I never had any plans to profit one cent from him selling me parts. And I am sure when I include the time spent and all the little bs stuff that does not get counted, I didn't really make a profit. But the fact was that the car ran like poopy and parting was the best idea for me. I am sure if I continued to constantly fuck with it, somthing would have been figured out eventually, but I dont let cars get me stressed like that. The minute is was not fun anymore, bye bye. Not to mention nate was as sick of it being at the shop as I was. And dont give me crap that everyone helped me and then I bailed on the car. First off, nate helped me 95% of the time, he deserves most of the credit. #2 dispite years of spending time working on the yellow car and nate parting it and sidelining it, you dont see me getting mad. That's bussiness. I did not get insulted when nate decided to stop dumping money in the car last year dispite the hours I spent sanding it. So I apericate any and all help people gave me, but there is no way I was spending another dime on that car, I had enough. Same with Rene, rich, and ryan. It was also not a waste of time IMO, I learned alot during the process of putting that car together, even if it never ran right. I also learned that having a dirtbike is more fun and less stressfull.

To increase their post count....yep, I do that too, on my board :D

I have enjoyed this thread the most so far this year, you guys crack me up to say the least. Now Luke and 90goldTSi bring up the best points(even though I usually agree with Nate's pov or assement) how can we call ourselves DSMer's and give up on our cars? it shouldn't be about turning over a profit(Nate has DS)I mean if you didn't know what you were getting your self into(Moneypit aka DSM)then you should've brougth a DSM. It's the same way with the Honda crowd, infact now that i think about it, it's worse they all do stupid shit like "go JDM" and motor swap and turbo their POS. So for me, I'm sticking with my baby, just like i'm sticking with DS all the way to the end.

Now the comment about having less people to hangout with, seems more and more evident every year. It seems (almost)for every newbie I meet, there's atleast two or three true DSMer's calling it quits. So now there goes some sort of hook-up and a maybe a trust worthy friendship. Only to be stuck with more newbies at each meet and they need/want hook-ups and information on there cars. So for the sake of DSM generation X... I'm sticking with DSM's for as long as I can. Even if they are "ruining my life" http://www.miamidsm.addr.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/Lol.gif

The bottom line is that ALL hot rods are money pits. If you go out and buy a new Evo and start modding the shit out of it then you're gonna be in the same boat but with a car payment on top of it. If I didn't want to spend money on my car then I would not own it. I totally understand someone who doesn't want to fool with this stuff anymore parting their cars and cutting their losses. At least Nate left the shell of his GVR4 intact so that someone else (Phil) could save it. While these cars may be a bit less expensive than most to make a 12 second street car out of, it's still gonna cost money to keep the car at that level. Also, don't forget that any car that is 10+ years old is going to break, especially since these cars put twice the power of your average Honda. Besides I got a good deal on some parts so THANK YOU RICH!!
