hey there. I've been thinking about getting a car to build up wiht my dad who really has on clue about cars but is sort of starting to want to learn. I'm not always fond of adding stuff to the spyder because i dont want to ruin its reliability or downtime. i know 1gs are a great deal, but im open to any ideas. It seems to me that the 4g63 motor is fairly easy to work on, but i've never looked at any other motors. i kind of like american motors but havent really researched much. I'd like to build up a mean NA motor...doesnt have to be ultra fast. More of something i can take apart and put back together and still have it be running, and if its not, get parts cheaply. I feel like the older camaros, early 90s, iroc era, would be fun to take apart the 305 motor or something. What do you guys think? I really have no idea. I've been takin apart a Honda CBX motor completely, but that thing is so little and obviously the accessories are different.

Either DSM, GVR4 (might be more Dad's style), or a Fox Body Mustang. The 1986-1993 stangs are fairly easy to work on and there's a ton of info on the net about them.

yeah bang for the buck was invented by the fox mustang. the dsm is close behind but has nowhere near the reliability or repeatability.

i was actually looking into FC's, but i dont know anything about rotaries, and i'd rather work on a normal 4/6/8 cylinder motor because thats pretty much what i've learned about in my classes. Im curious to see if i can put something together from what i actually learnd in school haha.

240sx with sr20 swap. could be done for under 4k. run 12's with slicks.

under 4k? joe your on crack. Good luck finding a good donor car for cheap enough. Ever since this instant flurry of sr20 swaps, not only is it difficult to find a 240, it is even harder to get one at a reasonable price. If you get the shell for free, then 4k is doable, but then you have a bone stock car with a god knows how old suspension, tires, etc. All said and done it's going to be much more than 4k

the epitomy of bng for the buck. 11's for under $2000 on street tires. low 12's without nitrous. Handled well, street driven. Easy to build..no custom fab.

I have a 1988 RX7 GXL (Non turbo). I like the car overall, from the people I know at Mother's / Real Deal you can basically use a garden hose with 1600cc injectors for fuel, a HUGE turbo, a Haltech and run 9's or 8's. I figure if that is the case it couldn't cost too much to run 10's, only thing is I've blown an engine already and had to swap it with a used one because they for some reason have exhaust/overheating problems. I agree with Nate though, I really feel that the DSM is the best bang/buck and the proven parts are getting cheaper and new parts come out every day to push the envelope even more.

What condition is the body and interior though? My experience is get the nice looking car with a blown motor or trans. Cheaper to get it running then to get it pretty. That said, if they are running and have no body damage, nicer paint, I'll take one!

so he bought a shell, motor/tranny/ecu, installation, exhaust, fmic, mbc, slicks, intake, and ic hard pipes for $3500? half that shit must be stolen because its hardly possible

nope he doesnt do that kind of business. he got it the motor cheap and the exhaust was cheap too. no more than 2200 for motor and trans i think. leaving the 300 or so dollar exhaust. he also installed the motor himself. starion front mount was laying around his garage and slicks were like 40$ i think. intake was homemade i think, same with pipes also.

i can vouch that this car is sick and was built for as cheap as joe is saying. and it did go 12.9 with just air filter, exhaust, slicks, and a welded diff. he does everything himself, he's the todd of 240s, is the best way i can describe him

Watch out with slicks on that MightMax, one of the guys on the GVR4 board has one, the rears are def. the weak point. He got a rear from a Toyo pickup and has had no problems.

not true....
me and joe's friend went 12.9@102mph on his 91 240sx he built for under 4 grand... probably about $3500 he spent...
simple.. buy a shell for $500, Sr20det = $1800 .. doing the swap is very simple nowadays.... fully gut it... weld the diff.. slicks... no managment, injectors, built transes, upgraded turbo's.... just bone stock and go 12's

ok so it was doable for this guy... but how many people can get decent slicks for $40? have fmic cores laying around their house, spare pipes laying around for ic piping, and a welder sitting there waiting to be used to weld a diff and the pipes? Not half the people that mod cars have those things available to them, a few here or there, but not many. This car is an obvious exception since he had half his shit laying around the house. For "normal" people, it is extremely difficult to do an sr20 start to finish for under 3500

most people that are into cars have a welder, or have a friend with a welder. the starion could be picked up anywhere, theyre cheap as shit anyway. the slicks he got a good deal on, idk if it was at a junkyard. pipe is cheap. everyone around us does most of their own work, i know of very few people that pay to get shit done.
